My daughter's back to school outfit was referred to as EMO...?

Since I am "out of the loop" as far as what kids are talking about....was this an insult to my daughter's outfit or just referring to the type of style it was. She loves her outfit, but her friends can be brutally honest and I don't want her feeling bad about an outfit that she spent her hard-earned money on. Thanks.

Update:

WOW...I'm surprised at the first answer. I had no idea. The outfit was picked out because it was on a mannequin at a high-end department store. She looks so cute in the outfit and it isn't short or anything for a skirt. My daughter has always had very good style sense....now I have to wonder if she made the right choice.

Update 2:

Maybe I should explain that it is a black and white checkered-pleated skirt..and then a black and white rock band type t-shirt. Not dark at all and she plans on wearing zebra patterned slip-on shoes.

Let me see if I can answer this in a way that makes sense...

to an "emo", being called "emo" is a good thing, as they are mostly attention whores who seek to be called "emo". So if your daughter is infact trying to be/is "emo" then to her its a good thing....

however...if she is what you call "preppy" then they were in fact being mean as (from my perspective, having been called "emo" many a time...even though I'm nothing of the sort).

I don't know if the above really suffices, so heres a little backstory on "emo" just in case you wanna make your own desicion.

"Emo" is a subculture movement stemming from the 80's "emotional music". While it used to be a legitimate thing/idea....it has now become, to quote emo icon Gerard Way "basically a pair of jeans and a haircut..". Modern "emo" involves skinny jeans, black, band T-shirts, studded belts, vintage t-shirts and a lot of shitty poetry.

But "emo", real "emo" is more a state of mind than anything. I mean, you can buy the "emo" look at forever21 nowadays...so pretty much any "prep" with cash can be "emo".

What might be best is if you just told your daughter (and if she's this kind of person, suggest she tell her friends) that real "emo" doesn't look like anything. And just because her friends don't know the difference doesn't mean she should feel bad.

*update* after reading your additional details I can say for sure that your daughter was not dressing emo at all. What she was wearing was a standard fashion designers take on "rock and roll" totally within the range of normal and would probably be scorned more by the emo kids than the preps for wearing it.

Source(s): being what your daughters friends would call "emo"

'Emo' is very in style with alot of youngsters at the moment. However, because it's so in style, some people can be insulting about those who use it.

Your daughters outfit being refered to as emo can go either way, depending on who said it; It can either be a compliment, saying that her outfit is really in style.. or an insult, saying she's trying way too hard to be in style.

I wouldn't feel worried or bad for your daughter. If she loves her outfit, then she obviously knows what comes with the style - including some bad attitude towards it. She most likely wouldn't care what others say about it, it's just the way it goes. There are plenty of people who would think your daughter looks really, really cute.

    emo is short for emotional.

emo is a very teenager thing nowadays so i guess it's pretty normal if your daughter are into it.

emo could be referred to a style or a genre of music.

it has a negative connotation though.

    i will go brutally honest..

emo in others perspective are like a 17 years old that don't smile who complain about life and make it out to seem so cool,by cutting themselves & dressing 'dark'.

    basically a poser.

i am sorry but that's just it, a negative connotation.

now i don't think emo person are a poser at all.

it's just a teenage statement afterall most of the teenagers needs attentions & to be cool.

but it's really normal. so i guess you should not worry unless your daughter REALLY cutting herself. :]

EMO is more of a sense of stereotype, so by calling her out emo, they're saying she falls into the characteristics of an emo person.

Emo is tend to be defined as hardcore punk. Skinny jeans(in dark blue or black), bright blue and black paired together, checkered hoodies, and chopped/razored straight hair are all characterised as emo.

It is also said that emo people cut themselves.

I personally don't know her friends, but it can also be referred to an insult. If they're not emo, they likely make fun of them or use 'emo' as an insult like people say 'gay' is an insult.

I hope I helped you(: xoox.

Very gorgeous clothing! Very chic for a 6th grader, i'm no longer loopy relating to the moccasins nonetheless, i comprehend they're comfortable yet i'd choose in basic terms a pair of black or gray apartments.

'Emo' is just another label. A lot of people slate this so called 'emo' style, but I see nothing wrong with it. It is a label for people who try to put other people in categories. Dumb people who think you can define a person with one word. It comes from the word emotional..things usually associated with 'emo' are cutting of the wrists, listening to music like my chemical romance, wearing lots of black and eyeliner, crazy hairstyles, etc. Of course its a load of rubbish. People like that are just individuals.

Emo means gothic and dark. Emo people are said to cut themselves, and I'm sure that your daughter loves her outfit, and spend her money on it, but she might want to find something else to wear. Instead of spending money on it, she should shop in her closet, and find something she still loves, that is a tad less dark. Good luck!

uhh it kinda depends on her. i mean if she is kinda dark and artsy and into those bands maybe that's what she feels right in. but if she is whiney and attention craving, maybe she is just a pathetic poser. sorry, but being honest on how her school will see her. i am not judging her or being mean, just trying to give u some sense to what the word can mean

hold on one sec, i'll get u two looks on the word. :)

ok this is the proper way i guess

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo

and this is what kids say

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Emo

ha i hope u learn how many diff opinions/deffinions there are

tell your daughter not to worry. there are tonnes of different style combinations out. and even in topshop theres a whole goth/horror/ range out for winter. loads of different things come in and out of fashion. tell her to tell her friends to get lost! she can wear what she wants to wear, maybe shes just got fashion sense!
