Matte paper vs. glossy paper?
I know what glossy paper is like, but I'm not sure about matte.
What does it feel like, can you compare it to something? And are the differences in the colors very noticeable?
Just tell me about it because i can't figure it out.

Glossy Paper:
pros:
-shiny look
-reflects light well
-vibrant rich colors
-appealing to the eye
-the standard finish we are now used to seeing
cons:
-can be hard to view under strong light sources
-fingerprints and dirt can be a problem
Matte Paper:
pros:
-does not reflect light
-black and white prints may look better with this finish
-easy to view under all light conditions
-does not attract fingerprints or dirt
cons:
-colors are dull looking
-do not appear to be high quality prints
-photo paper looks and feels like ordinary stock paper

Short answer is.
Glossy shows fingerprints.
Matte does not as fast.
Long answer,
Glossy keeps the white and the black in the image crisp. Gloss is what I print on most of the time when I am printing for MY wall. Use to do Gloss only when for print as well, now send a digital file.
Matte papers, a lot of choices in both how much texture and the base color of the paper and even some of the tone in the "black and white" papers.I have used monochrome papers that had blue, red and a nice cream base to them.
Matte Color paper is only the texture and the base on all I have used has been a very clean white.
Hope that helps

If you have the original print, it doesn't matter if it is matte or glossy. But if you are starting from a gloosy print and photocopy it, it is better to get the orignal document on a matt finish. Then, it can be photo-copied on glossy paper. Otherwise, the light will reflect off of it and won't gve as good a print.

Glossy shines and matt doesn't. (It's spelt "matt" in the UK, don't know about USA) Matt would be used a lot in Fine Art printing. I've used all types of paper, Gloss, Premium, High, Pearl and Matt. I quite like Matt but as someone else says, you get crisper, more contrasty images using Gloss.

Matte usually has a light texture, like a fine cloth.
Colors are the same, just not as vibrant usually. Matte isn't supposed to shine like glossy, that's what matte is all about.

Bruce M's response is right on. For gallery exhibits most professional provide glossy prints. And for small portraits outside of a gallery exhibit, then matte prints are okay.
Good luck!

matte is not glossy, i prefer this paper, the pictures look more professional, for black and white shots it's beautiful and they don't get fingerprint marks

If you are mounting behind glass then matte is the best to use as it will prevent reflection and glare.
I generally use matte for all my printing, I prefer the look and it is fingerprint resistant.
