Calling all landlords - would you rent to tenants with snakes?
Long story short - rented out my house last year via a thoroughly incompetent letting agent and when I sacked the agent I undertook a visit to the property. Turns out the tenant has a large number of snakes in glass cages, they said the agent knew about them from day 1 - I believe him, he has no reason to lie! However, is there anything I should be aware of in relation to this particular pet, is there any clauses I should draw up in the new tenancy agreement to cover any eventuality? Very happy with tenant, pays rent on time, house is being looked after, dont want to lose them but want to be aware of any possible risks.

I'm a Landlord and I have a no pet policy. Even the tenant is good maintaining the unit and pay rent on time, having endanger/dangerous pets could make you difficult to get homeowner insurance coverage plus a liability concern when there's accident happen in "YOUR" property.
P.S. Also you need to know whether the law in your city allow to own such kind of snake. Some may need a license for ownership.

If the letting agent is a member of an agent organisation like ARLA ( i doubt he is ) complain to them.
In future use an ARLA registered agent and insist on no pets!
As to posible problems, this will depend on the type of snake. e.g. A boa constrictor could escape and crush a child to death.
If the snake escapes and does harm you could be taken to court and sued for allowing a tennant with a dangerous animal.

Well at least you know he won't have a rodent infestation. If you don't want people to have pets then you should have thought of that.
What are you worried about? Are you afraid the snake will get out of the case and go on a maneating rampage?
It could be worse, he could have an alligator like a friend of mine did. Now THAT is something to worry about.

i have a snake, he just sits in his tank all day and does nothing else lol. they are clean compared with dogs and cats, and dont carry any diseases worth mentioning, except salmonella which is uncommon and not easily caught.
Escapees are unlikely but could happen, so maybe a clause stating they must have secure locked enclosures.
Id be happier people having snakes in my house then dogs or cats which shed hair everywhere and often have accidents all over the place.
