Ramadan: Why do we fast?

Just a reminder to my brothers and sisters about why we fast:

Allah says : “O you who Believe! Observing al-sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become al-muttaqoon (the pious).”

[Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183]

We must fast with the intentions of the above, not fasting for the sake of it, because your parents told you to, or because you want to show off to others. I have read many comments about 'losing weight' but we must remember, losing weight is not the aim of fasting. We must strive to become more pious and we must remember:

'When Ramadan comes,

the Doors of Mercy

(another narration says Paradise) are opened,

and the doors of Hell are closed,

and the Shaitans are locked up'

Thus, it is clear that du'a during Ramadan

has a greater chance of being accepted,

as the Gates of Paradise and Mercy are opened.

[Sahih al-Bukhari #1899, Muslim #1079 and others]

We must try to be nice to each other during this month, and forgive those who may have offended you and seek forgivness from those you have wronged.

Ameen

Salam/Ramadan Kareem

    Thanks for the info.

Also, please remember that another purpose of us fasting is so that we can remember to be kinder to the poor and give charity not only during Ramadan - but throughout the year.

It is stated in the Qur'an that what we are blessed with today may not be tomorrow.

It is easy for us to waste money on useless things that we buy but don't even touch, wear or look at again. How about saving that money to give to the needy? Imagine if it was you, your loved one, your kids, your siblings, your parents, your spouse in that situation of poverty - how would you feel knowing that many people in this world are blessed with money but couldn't help you out because they were to wrapped up in life to remember to give charity.

We can always prepare ourselves for the month of Ramadan. We can always eat in the morning and then break our fast in the evening. Many people in this world do not have that choice. Many people wake up to nothing and go to sleep to nothing. They have no roof over their heads nor AC's to keep them away from the blazing summer heat. They have no roof over their head to stay warm in the cold of winter. They have no proper clothing to cover their bodies to protect themselves from being sick. They have no food in their stomachs.

Please remember the poor not just during Ramadan but throughout the year.

Insh'Allah may we all strive to be better people and follow Islam throughout the year as we do in Ramadan. Ameen.

I could not agree more but why we must be good during Ramadan? Why can't we be good all year round?
