Compare: which is better; Skype or VOIP?
AT&T wants to charge me $150 to install VOIP. I may get to keep my phone number, and I can use all the phones in my house, my home system. It's $30 a month.
Skype lets me talk through my computer for an astounding $5 a month.
What's with this gap? Something is wrong with this picture, and as usual, AT&T gets money, the technology innovator struggles. Help me understand this please?

I would recommend you go with an even better option. If you want VoIP for less than $20 a month there are a large number of providers available (see http://www.voiprater.com/ for a list). Many of those providers will give you a VoIP box for free. You can then purchase a cheap multi-unit cordless phone set (Costco and Walmart usually have them available for under $100 with 4 handsets). Plug in the base unit to your VoIP box and viola, phone service in your entire home using VoIP.

well skype is a VoIP provider - however they use a proprietary system and there network is a P2P network... so basically they suck...
AT & T VoIP is provided over there FTTH (fiber to the home) network also known as U-Verse... it is normally bundled with there high speed fiber optic internet and television packages.....
of the two, the best choice for QoS (quality of service) is going to be ATT... skype will not be able to guarantee QoS of the voice calls going out over the internet, and the call quality will also depend on the resources of your home network, and the PC running the software client (unless you purchace an expensive hardware device such as a wifi skype phone which does not require your PC to be on)
if you do not mind leaving your PC on to use your phone then magic jack is a much better alternative than skype.. .
if you already have high speed internet then perhaps you can look into other VoIP providers such as vonage...
