Please help my friend's dog!!?

My friend has an 8 year old toy poodle (Shadow) who has a wonderful owner but whose children are quite mean to him. Every time Shadow approaches one of the children, they push him away and say that he is ugly or that he stinks.

It is Very true that Shadow is quite unattractive and that he stinks, but that is not his fault! His owner has tried everything from bathing the dog at home (with many different types of shampoo's) to taking him to the salon. But no matter what, he still smells (still, not the dog's fault).

Shadow's owner has tried to tell her children that they need to be more kind to Shadow, but they continue to be mean to her poor dog. I was even present to hear her son say, "I would be happy to trade Shadow in for another dog any day!!"

This is upsetting to me because I treat my dog like she is a family member! Please, what can I do to help?!?

Well some dogs love to cover their sent by rolling in grass so that might be a reason y the dog might smell. a way to teach a dog not to do that is to well watch them and if they try to do it then tell them simply NO!. For the unatractive part you can get the dog gromed i seen alot of ugleh dogs but after they got a hair cut they looked much better. To help with the kids you can try punishing the kids by takign things away from them or thetening them by sayign this is the only dog you will ever have to love him or w/e or you can simply get the dog more attention. i am not an expert but those are some ways that i can tink that might help

Give the dog chloraphyl and odorless garlic in a treat. Then have the dog checked by the vet. Usually, when people that are clean and still have bad body odor, it's a sign that something deeper in going on in the body. The dog might have health issues, the smell is bacteria. Have they tried bathing or rinsing in vinegar? And if he's in and out all day, there'll be some smell. When dogs get hot, they stink. Your "friend" needs to make her children be nicer. What if they grow old and are ill and stink? Would they want to be traded in on the sweeter smelling grandmparents down the hall in the old folks home? I hope your friend never needs to depend on her children...

There has to be a reason the dog has a smell and she should take the dog to a vet to find out what is wrong with him. He may have a thyroid condition, or something else that can be corrected with either a different diet or medication. The children also need to be taught how to treat an animal and not be such a bunch of spoiled unappreciative brats.

i would take the dog to a vet and see what the vet says and it the vet doesn't help then she could explain to the kids depending on the age of the kids ,that every time they treat shadow like that that there going to get treated like that, or she could give him to a family that will love him and take good care of him no madder how bad he smells because just like u said he cant help the poor thing.:)

Feed it a better brand of food. They also have dog cologne that can be sprayed on it. As far as the kids go it seems like they are just rude children, especially if their parents are telling them to stop and they keep doing it.

I don't know that there's anything that you can do. Your friend needs to talk to her children and DEMAND they respect the dog. That is not to say that they are required to LIKE the dog, but should at bare minimum treat him respectfully. On the same token, if they are not mistreating the dog -- i.e. physical harm, neglect, etc -- then what harm is there in what they say?

There's really not much you can do taking into consideration that this is not your dog. You could try talking the owners into surrendering their dog to the humane society where it will find a very loving home.

I would change the food; try feeding him Wellness, Halo or Orijen. And for the kids...it is up to her mother to teach them respect towards all living things. I just hope your friend never gets sick and she needs her kids to assist her. The mother should push the kids away from her when they pass gas or tell them she never called them stinky when they needed their diaper changed.

change the dog's diet to a higher quality dog food (natural balance is a good one).

Maybe suggest they buy different food. If they are feeding her crud, she's gonna smell like crud.
