To all witches/wizards/wiccans?
So, I know that you all (obviously) practice magic. And yes, I know what kind of magic(k) it is. I also know that wicca has a main rule that says you can not use magic(k) to harm anyone.
But I was just wondering how many of you here use white magic, versus black magic, and what's the difference?
I think white magic is for protection and healing and black magic is for destruction and more offensive magic spells such as hexing, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Prospero, what traditions use the terms black and white magick in such a way that black means mundane advances in life while white magick is through working with spirits? I'd like to know and do a little research on it as I don't think I have heard of that. My traditions sees the color category as red for love, green for money, white for blessings, black for destructive workings. It's just very interesting :D
To whoever brought up the term Warlock as "Oath Breaker" we understand that and I agre with your answer as many here are Wiccan but as someone who practices magicks much older than Wicca I must say that Warlock does not mean Oath Breaker to me. I am uncertain what it's true meaning is but as different words have different meanings to different people this happens to be one of them.
To me it is between Man of the Logs (of the runes) or Warrior of the lake. It is the counterpart to Laylock which is Lady of the Lake or Woman of the logs (again a person or priest who divines using runes).
Magick IS color, it's not that it doesn't have color because everything in existance (whether visible or not) has color to it. If it has no color then what is it? transparent?
The statement that says "magick has no color" comes from the belief that magick is neutral (originally) but that is only to let you know that it can be manipulated. We all know that low vibrations are around us all the time just like high vibrations. so if you have a low vibration, bad icky energy lingering in your house then because it is neutral then you can cast it out or transmute it. Change it from bad to good, from useless or harmful, to helpful. If it wasn't neutral then you couldn't do such a thing, you couldn't control it as easily and it wouldn't change for you at all.
Truth is that magick/energy is around us all the time and it isn't always good. So to lie and say that all magick has no color is untrue. As when people read energy we can sometimes describe it as a darkness in a certain section of the home. Which means that black can be a good color category to put it in. At the end of the day these are just labels, like you label your food in the refrigerator or anything else. You simply sort them out into piles for easy access or easy explanation for others.
So I feel it very safe to stop reading back lines from the movie "The Craft" at this point. ^_^ heh
So the difference is that white magick is beneficial to you when it is used and black magick harms others while also harming yourself. The reason why someone stated that it can't be controlled is because no matter how much you focus, magick will touch more than your intended target. This is true even for blessings, it cannot be controlled in such a way. That's like trying to move a river so it can travel in a straight path instead of letting it run it's chosen course. It's impossible!
When you do a blessing for someone, the energy your conjure is beneficial as it affects you too. Say if you are practicing healing work then your aura will now be soaked in healing energy that will help heal you too, not only that but people in need of healing will be attracted to you and they will enjoy being in your presence. Of course, this is because you are soaked with the healing energy that is now rubbing off on them.
When you practice low vibraional magick there is a certain way to do so first of all, then even then you will still have it lingernig in your life and affecting others around you. It's like a mud fight, everything in it's path will get messy.
It would be wrong for me to state that the labels white are for good and black is for bad when we speak of magick but it is a dominant thought that white is healing and helpful while black is harmful and destructive in nature. I mean the category of magick and not the color itself.
Someone mentioned that black magick is sometimes believed to have a stronger effect than white magick and as they stated themselves, this is not true because low vibrations moves at a slower pace. It's like room temperature water. High vibrations move at a much faster rate like boiling water.
Becuase they move at a faster rate then it has the power to push out of the way anything that moves slower. It would be also like pressure from a water hose. If you were playing water fights with the hose, black magick (no matter how effective) can always be removed with whtie magick as the pressure is stronger. So it would be like you using a hose from your garden against the hose a firefighter would be using to put out a burning building. Because the pressure or speed is much faster it can wash out the bad.
You can go into a darken room, light a match and remove the darkness but you cannot take darkness into a room of light and do the same.
Blessings and much luck on your research/journey,

First, not all of them practice magic. Wiccans do not necessarily use magic. Wicca is a religion with a God and a Goddess and religious rules and tenets. Many Wiccans are witches because Wicca is so compatible with witchcraft, but not all of them are. Wiccans who are not witches do not practice magic.
Second, Wicca does not have a rule that says you cannot use magic to harm someone. The Wiccan Rede says, "An it harm none, do what ye will". This doesn't mean to harm nothing. It means that if the action harms nothing, it is an okay thing to do; it doesn't say anything about actions that harm something. You should try to harm as little as possible, but it is impossible to harm nothing. By living, you harm whatever plants and animals that you eat. I like the Lycian Wiccan Rede which has a second line that says, "An it harm some, do what ye must" which means that you should judge the amount of harm that you do by a certain standard. Wiccans who practice witchcraft generally don't believe that they should cause harm by magical means, but it is not a set rule. Some Wiccans believe that a spell to stop a rapist is completely okay because it prevents a greater harm.
Third, most witches as well as other spell casters will tell you that there is no such thing as white or black magic. Magic completely depends on the intent of the user. We do tend to classify spells by saying whether they use negative or positive energy. Negative energy is destructive, and positive magic is constructive. Negative magic is not always bad, and positive magic is not always good, so you really can't classify them as white or black magic. A spell to help a person quit a bad habit or banish a bad influence from his or her life is negative energy, but helps accomplish a good thing. A spell to cause an addiction to something is positive energy, but accomplishes a bad thing.
I hope this clarifies things.

Edit: I would like to correct The Wicked Witch of the West. White is the presence of all color and black is the absence. White light contains every color in the spectrum and has to be broken up to see the other colors (like with a prism). Any place that is devoid of light is black like outer space. We define colors by how much light they reflect and absorb. Since white things reflect all visible light, white is the presence of all color, and since black things absorb all visible light and reflect no color, black is the absence of color.

Not all Witches are Wiccans and not all Witches abide by the rule of three from Wicca. I hear from a lot of people that there is no such thing as black or white when it comes to magick, that it is about the intent...well, if someone's intent is to harm then that makes it black magick IMO. I guess my magick would fall under "white magick" but I don't really call it that. I use it for more than just protection and healing, I also use it when I need a boost in finances or if I am moving and I want to find a good place. I have also used it when I am going out and want to have a good time dancing or meeting new people. I feel like all purposes that I use my magick for is positive and doesn't cause harm to others in the process of bringing good to me.
As far as black magick, yes I agree that hexing is one form and so are love spells. If you are trying to manipulate someone's free will, it's black magick.
*edit*
I can understand other people's view on why they don't like to use black and white but there are darker realms that people work in when they use black magick and the energies that they are working with are dark too. From what I know, the term "black magick" has been around for a really long time. A spell to cause someone to have an accident is bad because of it's nature to cause someone harm whether there is someone casting it at the moment or not. It doesn't take a person's participation to make something good or bad in nature.

1. Very few magickal practitioners call themselves wizards. It's kind of a nonsense term. None call themselves warlocks as it means "oath breaker."
2. Not all Wiccans practice magick. Wicca is a religion and while we do commonly do magick, it's not 100%. It's sort of like how not every Catholic studies to become clergy.
3. Very few Witches use the phrases white and black magick. White and black are colors with their own vibrations and meanings and both are neutral in their goodness/badness. No color is evil.
4. Not all destructive spells are for harm. Healing is destroying a disease, for instance.
But basically you have the right idea, yeah.

For the sake of this trade, we will be able to take as a due to the fact you're severe. If that is so, you then must now not be as involved as you sound. It is unlucky that you just might lose such an object, however you effectively make one more. A wand, like such a lot of different matters, is only a instrument. Like with any craft, the talent is within the fingers of the consumer, now not the equipment they use. Since you are saying you made the primary one, you already understand how to make one more. So get busy and give up whining.

It would be more appropriate to say "White Intention" and "Black Intention" as opposed to "White Magic" and "Black Magic". The tool is not good or bad, but how the user uses the tool. Are knives or guns bad? Initially no. But how the person using those items determines whether or not the gun or knife is beneficial or not. A Knife can be used for defense, to help open things or butter your food...it can also be used to cut or kill someone. Guns can be used to defend a person, or hunt animals to provide food for a starving family...or it can be used to kill a person for a petty reason...or no reason at all.
So see, it's not the magic that's bad or good, but the intent behind it.
Understand? :)

Agreed with maiingan, and Wicked Witch of the West (aside from her spelling of magic with a "j")
In addition to the tool comparisons, I would only add that darkness or "black" doesn't automatically equate to "evil" and "wrong". Sometimes darkness is necessary and good.
Think of a flower seed planted in the earth. It must begin its growth there, in total darness, taking root for strength and nourishment before it is able to break through the earth's surface and bloom in the light. Would you consider flowers evil, or offensive, or cursed because they grow from darkness?
The earth, and life itself is a constant balance between light and dark, and this balance is necessary.
Nothing in life and nature is as simple to be able to label it all as "black" and "white".

Magick is just magick. It has no colours. If you do it for good things like healing, to stop thunderstorm, to make it rain and like that, it is white magick whereas black magic is used to harm others, to make someone sick , to be a bad event or like that
It is a common misconception that black magic is somehow stronger than white magic. Most experienced witches know that this is not true, but it is true that the forces behind black magic are more difficult to control and things can often get out of hand very quickly. An experienced witch using white magic can be just as powerful as someone using black magic.

Some magicians choose to seperate magick into categories "White" and "Black," others do not. For some White may mean good, and Black evil... but these are not the traditional occult meanings of White and Black magick. White Magick is traditionally defined as any magickal practice that attains the great work. (psychological evolution, conversation with your Holy Guardian Angel, Spirit Guide,etc.. it's defined many ways) Black Magick is anything for mundane purposes. (i.e. getting a job for your husband, healing a sick friend, etc... whether good or bad intentioned)
edit: additional details: Storm (below), Aleister Crowley, who coined the term "magick" specifically outlined that black magick was any magick not used for attainment of knowledge and conversation with one's HGA. I don't make up things, and if you can find an older reference to black magick, written by a practitioner of magick, please let me know.

It's called a Wiccan Rede: Harm NONE and do what ye will.
"black" magick is a rough definition I give for those that "hex" or harm. Thus those who practice "black" magic are NOT Wiccan. No ands, ifs, or buts about it. I don't say I practice "white" magick. Magick is magick. It knows no evil. It's about intent. The intent is what I refer to when I say "black magick" not so much the magick itself. And most Wiccans have this understanding that it is all about intent.

white magic, dark magic, blah blah. There is no telling what magick is what color. It is the intentions of the practitioner. The terms white magic and black magic is mostly used in fiction books and movies.
