Why does my computer shutdown on its own?
My Laptop will stays on for 30 secs then it will shut down completely on its own. Even in the BIOS settings after 30 secs it goes off. The furthest that it gets is on the windows loading screen.
The laptop is an Acer aspire one with atom processor (model #ZG5)
Win XP with 1gb of memory. I usually can fix computers on my own but how can I fix it if does not turn on?
I tried the safe mode, last good known configuration options, but still 30 seconds and off it goes. I even tried to boot ubuntu from my pen drive but after the 30 seconds dies.
I see a pattern, and the only thing that I can think is a virus that somehow changed something to make the laptop shut down, even if I think that is mostly unlike.
What can I do? Please help!
Thanks
Warble I thought that trying the memory was going to be a great idea, but it shut down anyway while was doing the memory test, it lasted even less seconds, it actually stays less and less on.
Is not a faulty battery because it does it even with no battery.
The fan is on I can hear it start.
I do not want to open it because if it still does it I'm going to send it to acer and have them, fix it. I thought that it might be the HDD but it gets to the windows logo fine and that is stored in the HDD. Now it almost got to the log in page...what the heck!! Help!

Hello.
Interesting Problem.
It seems you are not the only one with an Acer Aspire One with this problem hehe.
It is a BIOS Problem, and you will have to manually flash the BIOS.
The AA1 has a built-in BIOS recovery routine, making it possible to flash the BIOS even if the system doesn't boot anymore. It's only meant for emergencies and may void your warranty, so use at your own risk.
Follow every step carefully!
First format an USB stick with FAT.
Download the latest BIOS, and put both FLASHIT.EXE and the BIOS file in the root directory of the stick. Rename the BIOS file to ZG5IA32.FD, that's important. Do not remove the USB stick.
Turn the AA1 off, make sure both battery and AC adapter are connected. Press Fn+Esc, keep it pressed and press the power button to turn the AA1 on. Release Fn+Esc after a few seconds, the power button will be blinking. Press the power button once. The AA1 will now initiate the BIOS flash, do not interrupt it under any circumstances. After a while the power button will stop blinking, and the AA1 will reboot shortly after. Wait patiently.
The BIOS has been flashed and all settings reset to default.
If for some reason you made a mistake during the procedure and it doesn't reboot by itself wait 5 minutes before turning it off, just to be safe that it isn't still flashing the BIOS.

P.S. The ZG5 is also known as the AOA110/AOA150.
If that doesn't work, you might need to consider ordering a service report and shipping it to ACER for examination and analysis.
Hope that Helps.

In my opinion because of three reasons this could be happening.
First, there may be some sort of poor battery performance or some kinda power problem in inside in your lap top.
Second is your computer may affected by some sort of virus.
And the third thing is your power Option Properties are assigned to turn off the hard disc after 30 Seconds. You better check the properties. You may try this to solve this problem you have to re install your computer with a original OS.

Nah, it isn't a virus. This sounds hardware related. I'd check to make sure nothing is overheating, if there are any heatsinks internally make sure they're attached firmly. If theres more than one stick of ram, try pulling out each one and starting up with only the other. Laptop hardware is a lot harder to get at, so i'm sure sure what you will be able to fix at home, you may have to take it to a repair shop.

Sounds like a heat problem.
Most likely lint has clogged the copper cooling fins inside the laptop.
The heat sink is what cools the processor.
Also possible the heat sink is loose and not dissipating heat.Or the fan has stopped.
Time to have it opened and checked.
Not much else can be done.
A laptop cooler won't do much for a 30 second boilover.

Try the memtest option on the Ubuntu pen drive to see if you have bad RAM.

It's an Acer, it's not supposed to work.
But, seriously, you'll need a professional to take a look at it.
