Most important features when buying a sword?

What are the most important features about when buying a quality sword? I will be planning on buying a semi decent sword soon, nothing highly expensive, just something that will work and hold a edge well, "I know it's mainly the steel that matters" But what I was wondering when I'm looking for one what are some of the most important things to look for and want in a sword? Steel type, what is a fair or good or great sword steel, Blade angel? 10-15 degrees? or more in the 20 range? weight?

Any experience, info or opinions would be great.

Update:

See I'm a knife and gun man, very little about swords, plenty about knifes and a world full about guns so this is where I'm new to this. I know you say I need to learn how to use one and that may be true, but for now I'm just asking what's important in a sword, as for the kind, yes Katana, unless someone could give me another in site to go with a different type.

Update 2:

Well I'm also 6' 4" so I'm a tall guy, medium build though.

Western or Chinese style swords should be of high carbon steel and be flexible enough to bend at least 45 degrees and still spring back into shape.

Katana do not bend like that, but hand forged high carbon steel is very important.

Do not buy the cheap wall hangers. At the very least, the steel is too brittle and the tang is virtually non existent. That means it will break almost the moment you use it.

    a katana or somthing chinese?

i can help with chinese swords,

the most important thing is try before you buy, if you have used a decent sword, via instructor or whatever you will know what you are looking for. if chinese you will whant prefferably somthing made of steel, and you whant a balance,

you need to see it has these things thats why you do not get the sword off the net.

hilt should weight as much as the blade does.

i recommend a hand and a half sword.

and it has to be long, but not too long.

or i would suggest buying twin blades. 2 short blades would be good. they can move fast and they can dart around better.

    Good luck.
