MLB HALF-SEASON RATINGS REVIEW

At MLB’s halfway mark, St. Louis again proved its passion for baseball, ranking behind only Boston as the top-rated professional baseball market. While an average of 9.5 percent of Boston households tuned in to Red Sox games so far this season, the Cardinals drew an impressive 7.4 percent of St. Louis homes.

But when looking at percent growth from this time last year, several surprising teams move to the top:

-The Texas Rangers, with one of baseball’s most exciting lineups, are enjoying a 50% increase in viewership in Dallas, the most year-over-year growth for any MLB team.

-The San Francisco Giants lead the NL wildcard thanks to superior pitching, contributing to 27% higher ratings. When Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum takes the mound, their average rating jumps an additional 9%.

-The Kansas City Royals’ ratings are up 23% despite trailing in the AL Central. The Royals’ ratings increase an additional 8% when Sports Illustrated cover boy Zack Greinke starts.

-The league-leading Los Angeles Dodgers showed no ill effects from the absence of Manny Ramirez, both on the field and on TV, where ratings have increased 20%, creating more ratings distance between the Angels, their in-market rivals.

-The Chicago White Sox are up 12% over 2008, and 27% over 2007, as they continue to close the gap on their cross town rival’s rating dominance.

Interesting, thanks Scooter. That's a good read.

I am especially happy to see my Brewers doing so well considering they are tied for 3rd in the NL Central with a 61-64 w/l record. We Brewer fans...through thick and thin *tear

The Rangers are simply shocking this season. Nice fan following.

It's cool to see the Royal fans supporting their team in larger numbers. It's those fans you really think..."Great fans"

I remember a squirrel who once asked, "Who watches the Brewers?" In a sarcastic way.

Silly squirrel, what was he thinking?

    1. I don't spend a lot of time complaining about the high payrolls in baseball. My favorite team, the Giants, is about middle of the pack (about $85 mil). For the most part, I don't really fault the big spenders for their high salaried lineups. If they have the money coming in, they should have the right to spend it. It's better than them pocketing the profits and putting an inferior product on the field. If a team spends its money wisely, they can put a very good product out their if they draft wisely and develop their players. However, I do have a problem with the Yankees free spending ways, whose only strategy in chasing a championhsip is to throw money at it. Their payroll of $200 mil eclipses all of the other top teams. Tied for #2 are the Cubs and Mets at a paltry $135 mil. This chasm between 1 and 2 is mind boggling and tips the scales too heavily. Baseball needs to firm up their cap to stem this type of imbalance. I'm not a Yankees hater at all...more of a Dodgers hater if anything, but it is getting out of hand. If I were a Mets, Red Sox, or Cubs fan I wouldn't feel guilty. Their spending is within the realms of acceptability and logic. If I were a Yankees fan, I would probably complain a little bit. I would realize the huge advantage, and it would probably take away from some of my satisfaction in winning. It's like Mike Tyson beating up on a 12 yr old. How satisfying can that be?

Red Sox ratings are high b/c our fans are diehard and they go to school and then move or even go to school away. And everyone at home watches b/c there isn't anything more addicting on TV. The Red Sox are a roller coster ride... I wish I could watch but I'm goin on faith now.. when I watch they lose and I love em too much to hurt them...

I'm totally surprised to see an ATL gain.

The Rangers have a shot... and they are likeable... Nolan Ryan is doing a great job.

No Marlins or TB gain? weird.
