My hard drive is failing, can i pull my data off before i totally destroy the drive?

My dell laptop goes to the blue screen without finishing a boot up. I ran a checkdisk and found this great error....

Error code 1000 1046

DST Short Status test...

I am about to just start over but I really want to get all my files off. is there a way to do this myself?

    Your hard drive is most definitely dying. If you have anything on the drive that you absolutely need, I would highly suggest you go to a professional to recover the data.

    You can try hooking to drive up to another computer (desktop), and seeing if you can copy the files over before the drive conks out, but I doubt that will work.

    See if you can boot in safe mode and save the files
