Practicing Cosmetologists, I need your help!?
I have my license but am not using it as a profession. I keep close friends and family members in haircuts but that's all the practice I get. In the past several years my sister has lost most of her hair. It went from a half dollar diameter pony tail to pencil. She keeps it long so she can put it up and not have to worry about how thin it looks. It's always up or half up, above the ears. At present, it's midway down her back, around her bra. We've decided to go shorter, but still long enough for a pony tail. She's mentally and physically disabled. I'm the only one with enough patience to cut her hair. Since I'll be the one to cut it I'm so nervous about making it look thinner with the layers. Can you direct me to a video on the internet that will show me how to cut layers to make it look its fullest? I am a member of behindthechair.com but there isn't a video with what I'm looking for. BTW, bangs are not an option. I know it would look more modern and give it some oomph, but she's not going to deal with bangs. She doesn't style it in any way except pony tail or bun, and french braided on rare occassions. We're having pictures made for our parents' Christmas gift and I want it extra special for the pictures. A step by step instructional would help me tremendously!

I think the best layers would be round layers. It will make the hair look a little fuller.
1. Create four standard segments with a center part.
2. Start the haircut in the front, take vertical sections from the apex area and working toward the front hairline.
3. Elevate the hair 90-degrees from the round of the head.
4. Overdirect the hair section forward on to the previously cut section.
5. Use wagon wheel sectioning and ocntinue cutting to the back.
Don't forget to cross check. Use horizontal-diagonal-back sections. Use the same elevation and overdirection used in creating the basic shape.

When you layer hair you are taking off bulk. The idea that layered hair makes it look thicker only applies to people with medium to thick hair. When they get layers the loss of weight allows it to be more voluminous and look thicker. When you layer thin hair, unless it is really coarse, it is going to look even thinner... because it is thinner. Really thin hair is not going to have more volume on top like med to thick hair will, it is just going to hang and look thinner. Has she seen a doctor about the thinning specifically? If you are going to do layers do long ones. How about a bob?
