The first Unforgiven took place in April 1998 and was part of the In Your House PPV series. The next year, the event was moved to September and it has continued to be held in that month ever since. After the brand extension, Unforgiven became a RAW only PPV event.

In 1999, this event was home to the worst match in the history of the WWE, the infamous Kennel From Hell Match between Al Snow and the late Big Bossman. This match was so bad that Mick Foley included it in his DVD, Hard Knocks & Cheap Pops, as part of his never ending campaign to humiliate his friend Al Snow.

The set up for this match was that the Big Bossman kidnapped and murdered Al’s dog Pepper. He later fed the late Pepper to Al. This grudge match was held inside a steel cage which was surrounded by the Hell in a Cell cage. The way to win the match was to escape both cages. However, between these two cages roamed a “vicious” pack of rottweilers. Al Snow said in an interview with 1wrestling.com: “They couldn't even show the dogs on TV because they were urinating, defecating, and fornicating to the point where the owners had to exchange numbers for puppy rights.” In case you were wondering, this was both the first and last kennel from hell match.
