Is it worth upgrading the motherboard?

Question

I have an old Dell XPS-T 500MHz P3 computer that still works, but even with 750MB RAM it isn't powerful enough for Win XP Pro.

Is it cost effective to replace the motherboard, RAM, CPU, video card, etc. with new components?  The new configuration doesn't have to be a high-end machine, just good enough to run Win Vista.

My iinstincts say it isn't worth it when a reasonably configured kit with case, powersupply, motherboard, cpu, RAM, hard disk, video card, etc. can be bought for about $300.

The system you describe that you have now isn't worth upgrading. I can't even imagine any of the drives or the case being useful.

I'd be very careful about buying something for $300 that you intend to run Vista on, unless perhaps it's something overbuilt but used. For that kind of money, you couldn't even build something yourself that would run Vista well, let alone buy something pre-built with profit on top. That's a very resource-hungry operating system. A large part of what prevented its uptake was that very thing. One needs a LOT of computer just to run the OS, let alone any applications. Windows 7 is slightly better in that regard, but not much.

Processors and RAM lead to high speed processing of applications on your computer while your motherboard provide you the facility of sounds, video cards, usb etc. so if your motherboard is supporting your processor efficiently then you don't need to change it otherwise for improved functionality in such , upgrade it.

new computers are so cheap these days and the performance is remarkable.  go with new, you will get a lot more for the $
