Will This CPU or processor be compatible with my PC or motherboard?
Ok I got a Dell Optiplex GX280 SFF with a Intel Pentium 4 540 HT running @ 3.20GHz (2 threads) with 1Gb of DDR2 ram, and a ATI Radeon X300 (PCI E), 160W PSU, and Windows XP Pro (not 64bit). I was wondering if this PC or my motherboard can handle a Intel Core 2 Quad. My Pentium 4 is a socket LGA 775 AND IT IS NOT A 64 BIT PROCESSOR. So can my motherboard handle a 64bit processor? The motherboard is form Dell, the model is 0H8164, and the chipset is a Intel i915P. So can I install a Intel Core 2 Quad socket LGA 775? Or my motherboard can't handle a 64 bit processor? Or after this can I install Windows XP 64 bit (my pc can handle up to 2Gb or ddr2 ram)? Good answer please Thanks.

Give us more information about your motherboard. example: gigabyte z77x d3h I think you can not upgrade to an AM3 type processor because you are limited to AM2 socket type processors (motherboard is AM2 socket thus meaning it has 940 pins). I think the Athlon 64 x2 4800+ is as high as you can go with this motherboard. Again provide more info of your motherboard.

The socket can yes, but wether or not the BIOS will work is a different question.
Don't waste your money on that machine. Add 4 gigs of memory and a Radeon 4770 and for about the same price, those two items will increase your performance dramatically.

I highly doubt it.
