Does the concept of a 'city farm' exist in the US?

In the UK, a city farm is a small area (a few acres), usually in a deprived area of the inner city, that has livestock and vegetable gardens. These city farms are charities and rely heavily on volunteers, and allow members of the public in for free or for a small charge. The primary purpose of city farms is not to produce food, but rather to educate people on where their food comes from, and to give people a chance to see agriculture in action, even though they may never visit a rural farm.

Are there any city farms in the US?

There are some cities that have them and the trend is growing. I know there are some in New York City, a big one in Chicago etc. The neighborhood volunteers take what they want of the fruits and vegetables and the excess is usually donated to charity kitchens for the homeless. I've never heard of one with any livestock in the U.S., though. Not even chickens!! ; )

Theres a few, but theyre not very common. You would have to be in a region that is known for being greener, like the pacific north west or north california. New york have a lot of roof top gardens, but they are generally private.
