According to an independent study, Avira is the best antivirus program out there but that is based on finding viruses WITHOUT running a manual scan. The trouble with Avira is that you get occassional pop-ups asking you to buy their full version.
If you dont like pop-ups then Avast is the next best free option followed by AVG. You will also want to pair your antivirus up with Malwarebytes, it is designed to plug the holes left open by antivirus programs. Having both malwarebytes and an antivirus program gives you a strong defense against all the bad stuff out there on the net.
Dont ever be fooled into thinking your 100% safe thou... Nothing protects 100%. Check out the site below for links and more information. The study I mentioned above can be found on the download page of the website below.

I have never used Avast but I have never had a virus since using AVG. Very simple to use. No noticeable slowing of my PC.
What problems with AVG? I'd like specifics on a claim like that. That is what I'm using. I have had no problems.

I would really recommend avast! because AVG has poor detection rates and does not include anti-rootkit unless you buy the full version. avast! is a fully functional antivirus with some antispyware capabilities.

Avast is miles ahead of AVG, But avira is ahead of both. Get Avira it is better then Avast. If people recommend AVG they are idiots.

I've been using http://free.avg.com/ for years... I haven't had 1 single issue... So I believe in their product 100%.
If I owned a business... I'd buy the full version... that's how good it is!
