Matt Hasselbeck currently has the highest passer rating (Qualified) in the NFL right now. Thoughts?
I would 85% of the people on here doubted matt hasselbeck for the rest of his career. Being that he has the highest Qb rating at 117% (aaron rodgers does not count because of the minimum amount of passes he has thrown but still very impressive non the less). Since Walter Jones is absent and Locklear is learning Left tackle matt has been getting sacked quite a bit. yet he continues to say he feels perfectly fine each time. Not to mention he trained with one of the best back doctors out of the country for months. Either way point is that even if its "pre season" hasselbeck is playing starting defenses and eating them alive. I feel that he will be a top 5 Qb this year.
Other Qb's doing very well are of course
Brady
Manning
Rodgers
Flacco
Brees
I am not talking about wins and losses. Not sure why the lions are being compared. i am talking about hasselbeck not his wins. Sure they are 3-0 but i do not care about that. Im talking about when Matt plays he goes against starting defenses. And he does very well and can take hits. Thus proving 85% of the people on here that ran there mouth about him.
And he has a lot of wideouts. In fact seattle and the patriots have some of the most depth at wideout.
Seattle's receivers- Tj Houshmandzadeh, John Carlosn, Nate Burleson, Deion Branch, Deon Butler, Jordan Kent, Courtney Taylor, Logan Payne, Michael Bumpus, Matt Hass, Ben Obneamu. Those are just receivers who all do well. Not to mention Matt has Edgerrin James and Julius Jones and running back.
Firearm- how is a passer rating terrible? Please explain to me how it is!
Insane b- lets take a look at Qb's last season
Philip Rivers had a 105.5 with 34 tds and 11 picks and threw for 250 yds a game with a 65.3 passer rating
Chad Pennington had a 97.4 with 228 yds a game with 19td and only 7 picks and 67.4 comp. rate.
Kurt Warner- 96.9 rating with 30 tds and 14 picks with 67.1 comp. rating and 286 yds a game
Drew Brees- 96.2 rating with 316 yds a game and 65 comp. rating and 34 tds and 17 int.
Peyton Manning- 250 yds a game with 95.0 rating and 66% comp rating. he had 27 tds and 12 int.
Aaron Rodgers- 252 yds a game and 93.8 rating with 28 tds 11 picks. His comp rating was 63.6.
scrolling down to mcnabb who only had
23 tds and 11 picks. He had 244.8 yds a game with only 60.4 % completion rating.
Jim Baw- I see what you are saying but i would not use 2008 as a example. Teams change in the off season for the better. Take Buffalo who in 2007 against the pass ranked 29th and in 2008 was 13th. Cleveland was 24th in 07 and in 08 was 14th in pass defense. And you mention the chargers who completely OWNED the CARDINALS PASS GAME. The team with one of the best pass offenses last year could not do anything. And as you mention it Denver defense so far ranks 7th in pass defense and San Diego is 19th and the Cheifs are now 28th because of hasselbeck. I agree with you on everything except last year teams stats and its only pre season. matt still plays hard against starting defenses until BOTH sides put back ups in.
Jim Baw- I see where you are going with last years pre season. but if you noticed there was only 12 qualified Qb's total. All but 2 were backups that being flacco and ryan. Thus proving no starters qualified. This year however you see a total of 19 so far and still 1 game left. And you see hasselbeck, Brady, Flacco, Romo, Cutler, Mcnabb, Orton, and Stafford etc. All i am saying is if you people actually look at hasselbeck and his throws he is on money. He is in the best shape of his life he said.
Either way jim baw you back up your statements and do provide a good amount of information. I enjoy debates with you and that is usually why i give you best answer even if its not what i want to hear. But the fact you back it up and make logical sense of any question is why i am glad you are here. Good man good man.

Come on now... it's the preseason!
According to the logic you're using, Tvaris Jackson is going to have a huge year as he's 2nd in passer rating. Followed by AJ Feeley (who won't even make the team in Philly), Leinhart, and Flacco... don't read too much into his performance.
Now I think Hasselbech has always been a very underrated and good QB, but I'm not ready to crown him among the leagues best or elite. For one, it's the preseason. Plus it's a very limited look - he's thrown what, 50 some passes so far? Any QB can be good in that short of a sample size. Furthermore, he played the Chargers (ranked 31st in pass defense last year), the Chiefs (2nd worst overall defense last year, 28th ranked passing defense), and the Broncos (30th overall defense, 26th ranked pass defense)....
Basically, he's thrown 50 some passes against 3 of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. And he's done well.... and that should be expected.
As I said earlier, I think Hasselbeck is a very underrated QB, but hold the horses on giving him too much credit based on preseason games against terrible defenses.
EDIT - Point taken - teams do improve or get worse during the offseason, but I would take a 2008 comparison over a 2009 preseason comparison any day... do you really think the Lions are going to have the 5th best pass defense in the league this year? Do you think the Titans will have the NFL's worst? That's where both of those teams rank right now. You mentioned the Bills improved greatly last year in pass defense.... but in this preseason they are ranked 30th in the league in pass defense.... so which one holds more merit? The 4 game span where reserves play over 1/2 the game? Or last years 16 game season where the team fields the best players available for the entire game?
I think you'd be hardpressed to find someone who truly believes that the Cheifs and the Broncos are NOT among the NFL's worst defenses coming into this season. I do think the Broncos have improved some, but even so, they're a far cry from a good defense. Even using the 2009 preseason stats for QB rating against for those defenses, the Broncos and Chiefs are ranked 2nd and 3rd to last in the NFL. I do agree that the Chargers D is better than the numbers from 08 indicate, but they severely underachieved last year, and they were without their best player. And as far as the Cardinals VS Chargers game goes, again, it's preseason. Warner and the starters were on the field for what - 4 or 5 series? I think they got pulled just after the 1st quarter. They scored a FG on one drive, and they drove down the field, and turned the ball over in the end zone on another. Is shutting down Brian St. Pierre and a bunch of no-name WR's the same as shutting down Kurt Warner, Fitzgerald, and Boldin? I don't think so, and even so, Warner had 80 passing yards in just over a quarter of play... so in a full game, he'd probably have pushed 300 or more yards.... that's shutting him down?... if it were a full-length game with the starters in, it'd have been a much different result.
EDIT 2 - Back at you. For what it's worth, I do think Hasselbeck will have a much better season than what many are expecting (assuming of course that the line gives him time). With all the injuries at WR last year, and along the line, it's not surprising that he struggled - virtually any QB would have struggled some. Will he be an all-pro? I don't think so, but he will be a solid contributer.
Source(s): By the way - last year David Carr had the highest "qualified" QB rating in the preseason. Followed by Brady Quinn and then Dan "I ran out of the back of the end zone" Orlovsky. John Kitna and Drew Stanton (both from Detroit mind you) had 150.5 ratings to tie for the highest "unqualified" QB rating... if that doesn't change your mind about preseason QB Ratings... I don't know what will. - 1 decade ago
Hasselbeck has been one of the top QB's in the NFL for several years and a pro bowl QB. If he stays healthy this year and I don't see why he won't again be a pro bowl QB. I think he is the best QB in the NFC West and the Seahawks will win the division again. Last year he was injured in the first game and never recovered. The team was devastated by injuries to key players last year and had more injuries then any team in the last decade or longer. When healthy, I would put him among the top five QB's in the NFL. He should have three or four good years left. I realize this is just preseason but he looks in mid season form already. He has never had the weapon's he has this season, they have a great group of receivers. When you listed his go to guys you didn't mention Carlson. He is going to become one of the premier tight ends in the NFL.

Being a huge seahawks fan, this all looks very encouraging. And I really think we are gonna do what we did in 07. Go 9-11 wins, win the division, and go pretty far into the postseason, with the highlights being touchdown passes from hasselbeck to Housh, and Burleson.
But don't expect others to think this. We are the seahawks, the SEATTLE seahawks! And for some reason Seattle in the general sporting world is looked down on.
But hey, GO HAWKS!

If Matt Hasselbeck stays healthy this year the Hawks will be back to there winning ways. I truly believe that they are the best team in that division. Matt Hasselbeck has proven he can win and is a great leader on a successful team. So far this preseason he looks like he is back in his pro bowl form.
Pro Bowlers for NFC at QB this year
Drew Brees
Aaron Rodgers
Matt Hasselbeck

Its preseason and no starter plays that many series during the pre season. Plus defenses are more vanilla they blitz a little but the main strategy's is to try different looks and to stay healthy.
I agree Hasselbeck is a very good quarterback however lets not put him in elite status yet.

I am hoping for a good (and healthy) season out of Matt Hasselbeck this year. I have him as a backup QB on a lot of fantasy football teams.
With the addition of T.J. Houshmandzadeh and having Deion Branch and John Carlson...I believe he could have a nice year with those targets.

Any QB could get a rating like that if they never complete a pass more than 8.2 yds. I thought you were talking about that he has the most passes at Celebrity women than anybody else!

Passer Rating is the most over-rated stat in football.
McNabb last year was ranked 15'th in passer rating and I would not take 8 QBs with higher ratings over him.
--Un-huh. you go ahead and take:Pennington, Schaub, Jeff Garcia, Matt Cassel, Matt Ryan, Shaun Hill, Seneca Wallace, and Eli Manning over McNabb.

It just proves that passer rating is the most useless stat in all of sports. Danny White was once the all-time leader for crissakes!

its the preseason, f*ck i could have a high passer rating...in the preseason. lol but i do agree hasselbecks career aint over yet, he will do good this season.
