Are you asking about the abbreviation "GB" (capital letters)? It is a computer science abbreviation for "gigabyte." And, it all depends on what you are planning to do with the device (in your case, a laptop computer).

There are two GB values you'll see on most laptop specs information:

    A) the RAM available

    B) the hard disk space available

RAM (random access memory) allows programs to run on the machine. The larger the RAM, the faster the machine is (generally speaking), and the heavier the load it can take. You'll want 2 GB or more for a decent machine, especially if running Windows Vista, and 4 GB or more for graphic design, gaming, or data-intensive use.

The hard disk space depends on what you want to store. Anything above 120 GB is recommended. Larger hard drives are ideal if you're making movies, designing graphics, or using the machine for large programs, like Adobe Photoshop or Dreamweaver. 320 GB is ideal for this.

Even though it's not measured in GB, look at your clock speed (the processor speed). You want 3 GHz for most of what I mentioned.

In today's day and age, with graphics and websites getting more complicated, the more room you have in your memory, the better off you are because your computer will move faster. Depending on your purpose for the laptop (mine gets used for everything), mine came with a 512 DDR memory stick and an 80 gb hard drive but that was 3 years ago already. It's still doing okay but you may want twice that due to the complexities I mentioned in the first sentence. Computers can be used for a very long time if there's ample room for upgrades. A 160 GB hard drive or higher would serve you well both now and down the road.

It depends on how you work and what you'll be going to do. For laptop, GB refers to the speed of the processor, amount of physical ram/memory and the video card memory installed in it. For the internet, the correct unit of measure for data transfer is Mbps (Megabit per second). Usually 5-10MBps but some reaches up to 50Mbps( I'm not really sure about the 40Gbps ). But for you, get the one that you can comfortably afford, the higher the better.
