6 month old rott needs home - should I adopt?

I am now considering a 6 month old rottweiler who needs a home as her people are being evicted. Would a 6 month old Rott adjust to being with 2 other dogs or should I wait and get a younger puppy if I get a Rottweiler? I am an experienced dog owner (have had GSD's for years - but they got along with everyone). I heard Rotts can be funny that way.

No one can answer this question. It depends totally on the puppy's temperament as well as the temperaments and sociability and dog friendliness of your 2 dogs. If your dogs are well socialized and dog friendly, and you meet this puppy and determnine that it has a good temperament, there's no problem. And rottie's are no worse than other breeds - its training and socializing, as well as genetics. There's good and bad in every breed.

Take this puppy and have it meet your dogs (never on leash) and see what happens before you decide.

If you're an experienced dog owner, you should know enough to not stereotype a breed in such a way. Some dogs simply can't get along despite their breed. It really depends on the dog's socialization or lack thereof.

You may have to work with the dog socializing it before you bring it home, take articles of clothing back and forth for the dogs to smell each other and introduce them in neutral territory. Keep the new dog in a confined area for a while so that your current dogs can get away from him in their house if they want. 6 months old is still a baby, but beware that problems could arise as the dog gets older and larger. Keep a close eye on them and be sure to give your current dogs extra attention.

    Best of luck

You should set up a meet and greet for the rotti and your pups and gauge how they react to one another. 6 months is not that old, and actually my dog sitter has 2 huge rotti's that get along with every dog she sits for. They are so docile and sweet, they think they are lap dogs (and each one is over 100lbs).

I've even seen them retreat from an overly confident Jack Russell. Like pit bulls, rotti's seem to get a bit of a bad reputation, but like any dog, if you're willing to put in the time you will reap the rewards.

If you really want to help and you can do what you have to do, go for it. Yeah, Rotts can adjust to that, it's just a matter of time. Here's more info about this intelligent breed, http://www.miniurl.com/15481
