How wide can a Hippo open its mouth?

The maximum gape angle for an adult male hippopotamus is 110°, according to a series of studies made in the 1970s.

I have seen numerous sources which claim a 4ft tall child can fit in a hippo's mouth, that is standing on the lower lip, with the upper lip above the child's head.

This doesn't so much say how wide, rather how huge the mouth is.

Unsurprisingly I have not been able to find a picture of a child standing in a hippo's mouth, so it's hard to judge the accuracy of the claim. Hippos only eat grass and water weeds, but they are very aggressive, so I don't see a conscious one letting anyone stand in its mouth.

Your average fully-grown beast is going to be about 3 to 4 tonnes, the male being the larger. Just accidentally brushing against you might be enough to get you killed.

Is it a baby hippo, or a grownup? Pretty wide, and really wide is my humble guess......
