Based on Roman law, they were able to. It was prophesied that Jesus would die.

Yes, he had to be killed for the chosen ones the father gave him. else we who are really born again would not be able to enter into heaven. Christ is the door. He bared the elect sins. He rose from the grave, so now we will rise from the grave and live forever. Jesus came to this sinned cursed earth to die for his elects sake. He was born to DIE. Only God can do such a thing. Yes, the romans crucified him and killed his physical body, but I amd many others are responsible for our Lord's death. Why? Because he died to set me and others free of bondage. So, yes We also caused him to die. What an awesome God he is. What a savior.

To satisfy the blood lust of a vicious, petty, tyrannical, unforgiving, maniacal god. Yes, apparently he did.
Edit: it is odd how some of you post answers that are incomplete; that SEEM to make sense but really are designed to hide the truth. For example:
(my additions in CAPS)
Jesus had to give His life, for our salvation FROM GOD'S WRATH.
We have all sinned AGAINST GOD
Only JESUS is acceptable PAYMENT for our sins AGAINST GOD.
All the good deeds in the world won't pay for even ONE of our sins AGAINST GOD.
The truth about Jesus is that the only way to be saved FROM GOD'S WRATH and to get into heaven and avoid being sent to eternal hell BY GOD, is by believing in faith alone that Jesus, who is God,

See? If you buy the whole scriptural thing, GOD demanded the death of Jesus. Jesus even prayed and begged to be spared from the carnage and GOD would not let him off the hook.
An infinitely powerful and infinitely merciful GOD would not have demanded such a thing. It tells a great deal about GOD's power and mercy -- or perhaps lack thereof.

Its unrealistic that the Romans would have killed Jesus and let a criminal go free.

No, I don't believe that Jesus "had" to be killed. From the Bible, we find that many believed on the teachings of Jesus Christ before he died. The 12 disciples of Jesus didn't wait for Jesus to die in order to believe in the power of God within Jesus; they "dropped their nets and followed him" while he lived on earth. And, according to scripture, Jesus was crucified by Roman execution.

Yes he needed to sacrifice himself to save the humanity that wants to follow him.
Because of Adam and Eve we are sinners we need a perfect person like jesus to sacrifice his life for us.
its like the reverse of what Adam did. John 3: 16
You should read the Bible more often
I couldn't find the one that tell about adam did and that we need someone to save us.

It wasn't murder. He was convicted of a crime and sentenced to death (a death he freely accepted).
The Roman Empire was the most powerful entity on earth - until Jesus proved that nothing is more powerful than God. They crucified him but he rose from the dead.

Yes. Because of Jesus dying on the cross He has saved us all from sin so we can have everlasting life in heaven.
The jews are the ones who wanted him crucified and it was the romans who did it because they didn't want to have a riot, per say.
But it was prophesied that Jesus would die and be raised from the dead in three days in Isaiah.
Hope this helps. If you have anymore questions like this, please go to your nearest church. I'm sure they'll be happy to talk to you. =)

Once I heard it explained that one drop of Jesus's blood would have saved us all- since he was perfect and God himself.
He gave His life in the way he did, to prove the depth of his love for us.
