How to deal with the medicine Chantix?
Someone I know has been taking Chantix for the past 3 weeks. I didnt know about it until the beginning of week 4, which is just starting. After doing some heavy reading on the prescription drug, I learned a lot of nasty side effects from it and I am beginning to worry. The doctor prescribed the drug for a duration of 3 months, but should I tell the person to stop right now? What I'm worried about is that I've read a lot of reviews that say people experience nightmares and suicidal thoughts a few weeks (im guessing 4+) into the medication. They've also said that once the patient stops, there's a chance of horrible side effects (i.e. depression, suicidal thoughts). What should she do? Continue with the medicine, or stop now? And if she chooses to stop and experiences such side effects, what should she do to deal with them? Please help; this person is very dear to me.
Thank you.

My husband's friend took Chantix for a while. And I DO NOT recommend it to anyone. Tell her to stop take it immediately! Not only the friend suffer from terrible terrible nightmare- he saw his kids tied up to a tree and someone is cutting her up with chainsaw - yeww--- it's like a nightmare from the movie Elm street....... He said it was extrmely cruel and vivid. it's like you dream about your worst fear. On top of that, he now have permanent hearing loss on one ear. I cannot believe Chantix is widely advertised.
You know, when it comes to your friend, I would not recommend anyone to take Chantix, but it's also proven to be helpful to quit smoking. I would take to her about your research for sure, and maybe you can let her choose? If she has taken the medicine for a while and haven't had major side effects, maybe she is one of those people who has successful Chantix experience? Either way it's risky business to take medicine known for a really bad side effects. She might have bad experience if she takes them for a long time. Information is very important, but it's altermately her decision. it's her body. But it's very nice of you to concern about her and do reserach for her. You should definitely talk to her about the medicine. She is lucky to have a friend like you. Tell her I said Good luck with quitting.

I have a friend who took Chantix and was successful in quitting smoking. Since it's a prescribed drug, anyone taking it is monitored by a Dr. for side effects If your friend will read the insert that comes with the drug she will know what the possible side effects are, and it will also tell what %age of patients experience these side effects. Then she can be aware of any changes she has. If she has been on it for almost a month and hasn't had any serious side effects, don't be so worried. If she does have side effects she should tell her Dr. If she begins to feel suicidal, she needs to talk not just to her Dr. but also to a therapist or psychiatrist. If it's recommended that she go off the Chantix, it will probably be done slowly, since abruptly stopping a medication can bring on other side effects. Another possibility would be the Dr. prescribing another med to take with the Chantix to counteract the side effects.

those things you mentioned (the suicidal thoughts, depression) are only experienced in rare instances...i dont have the chantix literature with me but it was something like less than 1% of people...so all these people who claim chantix caused them to lose their job, or made them do this or that, i dont buy it for one second
i think people just like to make excuses..i have seen one lady complain about how she took chantix then months later her MS flared up..come on, is she really gonna blame the chantix for her pre-existing condition? yep, she did..
i may only be the third i know to have taken this stuff but i am fine, my bff is fine, her friend is fine, none of us experienced any of these rare side effects and i doubt your friend will either..
i also tend to think even in the absence of these pills people who quit smoking will be more agitated and more depressed because they are detoxing, i dont think it is the drug's fault
Source(s): ask your friend if he has had any violent or disturbing nightmares and find out if they relate to anything he had contact with that day (ie: i watched Quarantine and that night had a dream where i was in an apt building running away from rabid people..just like the movie) Perhaps it is best to steer clear of violent movies etc until he's off the pills but come on now, a disturbing dream or two is a small price to pay for quitting a deadly habit and i dont what to say about that dude who dreamnt his kids were being chainsawed...disturbing yes? life altering no
