Bird Repellent Question?
My next door neighbor doesn't own a bird feeder, but instead throws birdseed out on her lawn and driveway every afternoon. Every day, birds perch on my roof and wait for the birdseed.
I'm looking for homemade remedies if I can. I don't really want to spend money on anything unless I just absolutely have to.
It wasn't a problem, but now there is bird droppings all over my roof. I've asked my neighbor to stop, but she says she forgets and does it anyway.
I don't want to cause a war with a neighbor, so I was wondering if there is anything I can do to keep the birds off my roof. I don't want to injure or kill the birds, just want to keep them off of my roof.

Hey Dick,
Like someone mentioned below bird droppings can be harzardous. Not only that, but it can also damage your roof overtime. Maybe you should spend some time getting out and learning a few things before you make false assumptions.

look for a scarecrow for them, like a snake or an owl or other bird of prey decoy. (you might need several, depending on how many birds there are. The decoys are fairly easy to make if you have even a tiny bit of craftiness in you. & as someone else suggested, plastic owls are fairly cheap)
you'll want something that can move in the breeze so it appears to be alive. If it sits still then eventually the birds catch on that it's not real and not a threat but if it moves then it scares them away.
also contact your local zoo or your local extension office for suggestions on ways to scare off the birds. as long as she's feeding them, they're hanging around.
if there are enough birds then the bird poop can be considered a health hazard and you can get you local county offices involved.
Do you have a home owners association? you can also issue a complaint through them if it's bad enough and they can take control if your neighbor just won't cooperate.

BIrd Spikes or Bird gel would really be your 2 best option besides asking your neighbor to stop. The feces is not only smelly and not very attractive to look at but can contain disease.
I can get you a tube of the bird proof gel for about $12.00.

To the person named Dick, bird feces can attract rodents. Also, feces that just sits can turn acidic and can rot a roof. Know your facts.
As for your problem, go to a feed store and check out their rodent section. They should have some non lethal ways of getting rid of birds.

If you are willing to spend a few bucks you could buy a plastic owl or if you are handy you can cut out a black bird of prey silhouette out of wood or metal.
