The thing i fail to understand about Christians and the bible?

Now if you worship your god, call yourself a Christan (or whatever you want to call yourself) shouldn't you follow the book (in this case the bible) word for word? Because it is very obvious you pick and choose

Depends on what you think we "pick and choose". Now, you need to know, that it's impossible to follow the bible word for word. You see, that was the reason Jesus came to sacrifice his life for us. It's impossible to live to the standards of the 10 commandments. We should strive to follow it. But there's no way humanly possible to obey all the commands. We are human and we have inherited sin through Adam. There was only one perfect man on this earth, And that was Jesus! No faults, no sin. So we no longer live by the law of moses. We live now by grace.

definite, yet without the prophesy at the back of it, which the main needed. He walked each and every prophetic step. No-different guy would desire to or possibly could do what He did. The prophesies of Yeshua have been written formerly his time. From beginning to revelation. God gave that message to Isaiah. Isaiah 11:6 and Isaiah sixty 5:25. of direction this occurs contained in the hot Jerusalem. 2d Peter 3: 9-14. Revelation 21:12. stable analogy for my area. Yeshua (Jesus) informed people who examine the old testomony in His time, "seek the scriptures; for in them you think of you have eternal existence: and that they are they which testify of me. John 5: 39. That project replace into to take place, the persons watching His Authority and His miracles. for my area, there is not any-way the real Jewish believers shouted crucify Him. there have been outsiders or people who weren't so Jewish via descent who would have lived between those human beings and the stressful-nosed Pharisees have been rapid to shout that Venom out of their mouths. all of us understand the real murderers, and who grew to become the scapegoats.

    You stated:

    "shouldn't you follow the book"

Christians do follow the teachings of the bible and the Church has a body of men appointed to interpret scripture, to minister and guide the faithful, and to establish and clarify Christian doctrine. And -no offense mind you- that group does not include you, or anyone else in this section.

when you read a book, the main thing is the message you get out of the text. same as bible reading, the main thing is not the words you see on a paper, it's what your mind and heart are taking in...

the best thing to do is if you get confused/dont understand something, you ask questions and there is always a person to answer you

im catholic so i cant speak for all Christians. the old testament the one u r referring to was written thousands of years ago in a time very different from our own. It was actually written by the Hebrews(Jews) those books are like background info for the salvation through Jesus Christ.

a lot of the New Testament was written by Moses for his people, the Jews. Well I'm not a Jew in the days before Jesus, so pardon me if I don't check myself for leprosy in the year 2009.

Source(s): 'as the Lord commanded Moses', not me and you.
  • Justin, you have asked the greatest question that not even every christian will give an honest answer to. Look at the answers from the christians so far....they're giving half-hearted answers because while they're doing their best to be noble and standing up for the faith as they know it....(and I do wish them well) they're NOT taking the bible literally like they should. They are (as you said) picking and choosing, saying things like "well, I only go by this" and "well, this is for me, but this goes for that" and I doubt you'll have 2 answers match up. So let's get to the solution.........shall we?

The answer does sit within the bible itself, and it's in 2 Timothy 2:15, the Apostle Paul was teaching his student Timothy how to study, and he stated this," Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." There lies our answer.

Every single word of the bible is to be taken literally. Every single word from the first word of the first page to the last word of the last page. Not "pick and choose" Not "I like this one, but I don't like that one". As the apostle Paul says the Word of God is to be "rightly divided".

What does that mean, you ask? It means you take the word of truth, and divide truth from truth, (rightly, as it literally states) placing everything in it's proper contexts. The bible speaks to 2 groups: The nation of Israel under the Law of Moses, and the Church today. If you don't rightly divide the word of truth....you will think they're you....and you're them!

It will cause you to "pick and choose"...it will cause you to read the verses and say....I can't possibly do what the verses are telling me to do......I'm going to just do what I can, and pick THIS verse, but I can't possibly do THAT verse..... let's look at an example....

Numbers 15:32-36 says "And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him. And the Lord said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stone him with stones, and he died; as the Lord commanded Moses."

Now....as we "rightly divide" that....Is that a verse applying to the church down the street to you? Or to the children of Israel who was in the wilderness? Imagine a pastor stoning some granny who was picking up sticks in the front lawn of the church on sunday because he read Numbers 15 in his bible and didn't "rightly divide" it!

As we look at another verse that does NOT apply to the children of Israel, but to the church today, we read (literally again) in Romans 12:18 - "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men".

That's the church today! We don't have instructions to stone people, because we're not Old Testament Israel! And Old Testament Israel's not us! If Old Testament Israel were to "live peaceably with all men" they would have slapped that guy who picked up sticks with a ticket or something! But it was their duty to live under the LAW of the lord, and it is our duty to live under the GRACE of God....two different people, two different sets of instructions....and it becomes further and further clearer as the bible becomes rightly divided
