I really am quite astounded by the misinformation posted on here by people who know almost nothing about Judaism but somehow feel they can speak for Jews.

Judaism is a totally different religion from Christianity. I'm always curious that people ask why we don't 'believe in Jesus' but don't seem to find it necessary to ask this of Pagans, Hindus, Buddhists etc. Just because the Christians borrowed our bible (and re-ordered, translated and re-interpreted it) doesn't mean we've got anything at all to do with their religion. Thank you for acknowledging you know almost nothing about Judaism - if you read what Convert Ruth has posted and this posting, you will at least know something.

We do indeed have prophecies of a moshiach (translated as messiah). The thing is, the prophecies we have are NOT the ones the Christians claim to find in our bible; the moshiach is not central to our religion; we are perfectly clear that there is a possible moshiach in every generation but he can't be THE moshiach until the era of peace arrives; the moshiach is entirely human, in no way divine, not to be worshipped and decidedly not a miracle worker.

Our religion is so different from Christianity it's hard to know where to start. Let's begin with the basic fact that Christianity is a religion based on faith; Judaism is based on covenant. It's what we DO that matters. And our focus is this world, here and now, making it better (not being good so we can get to heaven). We are also expected to enjoy everything there is to enjoy - why would the divine have provided enjoyable sex, delightful views, the joy of family and community, great food, if we weren't expected to enjoy them (in moderation)? Christianity tends to be rather suspicious of enjoying the good things in life and holds up as good examples those people who deny themselves all these things. We are asked to be constantly aware - to bless all the things that make life good (that includes being able to go the loo when we want to!), to be alert to what will improve life for others.

We believe that ALL people (not only Jews) have a place in the world to come if they lead a good life. We're not very fixated on what happens after death, so rather than the complex theology of what is to follow, we have a whole lot of rather vague notions - we basically say "leave it up to G-d, our task is to get on with life in the here and now". But there is NO concept of hell - if you haven't quite hit the mark, you'll spend up to a year getting sorted out before going onto wherever, and if you're seriously beyond any possibility of goodness, you just stop existing. There's a strong Jewish tradition of reincarnation but it's not the same as the Hindu or Buddhist ones and it's by no means universally accepted, or even thought about, among Jews.

Many thanks to Kanien:k... who has been clear in stating that this is a question for Jews to answer, not people who imagine they're so clever. Just to answer a few of them - Jesus is a total irrelevance in Judaism - we have no more 'acceptance' or 'belief' in him that Christians do in Krishna or Brahma. Some individual Jews might think that historically he did exist; others think it unlikely; the only reason we ever think about such things is because we're constantly being asked by Christians!!

answer: everyone reaches heaven in Judaism. If you aren't righteous when you die, you are separated from G-d for a SHORT period of time. No eternal torment, no hell.

What separates Judaism from Christianity is everything. It's not just whether Jesus was the Jewish Messiah. Christian beliefs are incompatible with Judaism totally.

    Jesus wasn't the Jewish Messiah.

Reasons Jesus wasn’t the Jewish Messiah

    divine birth/divinity - (the Jewish Messiah will be human – G-d cannot become human – Deuteronomy 6:4, Isaiah 44:6, Hosea 11:9, Ezekiel 28:2, Numbers 23:19) - strike

performing miracles - (JM won't perform miracles) - strike

taking on the sins of others - (no one can take on the sins of others – Deuteronomy 24:16, Exodus 32:30-35, Ezekiel 18:1-4; 20-24; 26-27) - strike

breaking Sabbath - strike (JM will be observant) - strike

sacrificed/rising from the dead - (G-d rejects human sacrifice and blood sacrifice is NOT an absolute requirement – Deuteronomy 12:30-31, Jeremiah 19:4-6, Psalm 106:37-38, Ezekiel 16:20, Leviticus 5:11-13, Jonah 3:10, Leviticus 17, Leviticus 5:11-13, Numbers 16:47, Numbers 31:50, Isaiah 6:6-7, Jeremiah 7:22-23, Psalm 51:16-17) - strike

prophecies unfilled - (JM will accomplish them in one life time) - strike

being worshiped - Jews worship G-d and only G-d – strike and OUT

The Messiah cannot trace his lineage through Jehoiakim, Jeconiah, or Shealtiel, because this royal line was cursed (I Chronicles 3:15-17; Jeremiah 22:18,30). But according to both Matthew 1:11-12 and Luke 3:27, Jesus was a descendant of Shealtiel.

    * The Sanhedrin will be re-established (Isaiah 1:26)

    * Once he is King, leaders of other nations will look to him for guidance. (Isaiah 2:4)

    * The whole world will worship the One God of Israel (Isaiah 2:17)

    * He will be descended from King David (Isaiah 11:1) via King Solomon (1 Chron. 22:8-10)

    * The Moshiach will be a man of this world, an observant Jew with "fear of God" (Isaiah 11:2)

*****In other words - this must all be accomplished in a human lifetime*****

    * Evil and tyranny will not be able to stand before his leadership (Isaiah 11:4)

    * Knowledge of God will fill the world (Isaiah 11:9)

    * He will include and attract people from all cultures and nations (Isaiah 11:10)

    * All Israelites will be returned to their homeland (Isaiah 11:12)

    * Death will be swallowed up forever (Isaiah 25:8)

    * There will be no more hunger or illness, and death will cease (Isaiah 25:8)

    * All of the dead will rise again (Isaiah 26:19)

    * The Jewish people will experience eternal joy and gladness (Isaiah 51:11)

    * He will be a messenger of peace (Isaiah 52:7)

    * Nations will end up recognizing the wrongs they did to Israel (Isaiah 52:13-53:5)

    * The peoples of the world will turn to the Jews for spiritual guidance (Zechariah 8:23)

    * The ruined cities of Israel will be restored (Ezekiel 16:55)

    * Weapons of war will be destroyed (Ezekiel 39:9)

    * The Temple will be rebuilt (Ezekiel 40) resuming many of the suspended mitzvot

    * He will then perfect the entire world to serve God together (Zephaniah 3:9)

    * Jews will know the Torah without Study (Jeremiah 31:33)

    * He will give you all the desires of your heart (Psalms 37:4)

    * He will take the barren land and make it abundant and fruitful (Isaiah 51:3, Amos 9:13-15, Ezekiel 36:29-30, Isaiah 11:6-9).

Source(s): btw: "Messianic Jews" aren't Jews - they're Christians. Poor Moldy Prince seems to forget that converts have ALWAYS been embraced in Judaism, by G-d Himself. Ruth was one famous convert. The Khazar accusation is an old antisemitic dodge that doesn't hold any legitimate argument. The Khazars faded away before any significant contact with European Jews in the Diaspora. As proven by DNA tests. Jews are Jews, no matter what their ethnic background is. Revelation is a political rant disguised as prophecy and was referring to non-Jews pretending to be Jews. That sounds like an odd Christian group I know, not traditional Jews (who have NEVER turned from their religion)

They believe Jesus existed, they don't believe he's the Messiah

their book is the Old Testament of the Bible, they don't believe the New Testament

They believe the Messiah is coming some day, but Jesus was not him

They believe in Heaven, but do not believe in Hell. If you were bad during life, you spend a time in Purgatory before entering Heaven.

They're generally much more accepting than Christians, and they accept scientific ideas like evolution and the big bang typically.

Jews do not believe Jesus was the Messiah. they are still waiting for a man who they think was there messiah to come back to life.

They also still follow most of the Torah, or the old testament law, which includes not wearing clothes of different materials, and not eating milk around the same time as eating meat. they are really legalistic, and there sabbath is on saturdays, starting friday evening acctually.

Christians have no law, just following christ, and are saved by grace.

Jews believe he existed, there is almost no doubt about that to most scholars anyways, they just dont believe the son of god bit

When Paul wrote teh New Testament he wrote all the stuff to show that Jeez fulfilled all the Jewish prophesies.

The Jews know it's all a crock; they're still waiting for their Messiah.

pretty much, that is all that separates Jews and Christians.

Jesus was a real man...there is no question about that.

However, Christians believe that Jesus was the Messiah and that he had his rising or w.e.

Jews don't think the Messiah came yet.

  • 1 decade ago

Because they are not real Jews Revelation 2:9 3:9 speaks of these so called Jews. Judaism is not real. You can't convert to being a Jew (Judean) your bloodline has to trace back to the land of Judah. Those ppl are Khazars. The holocaust never happened.

  • 1 decade ago

They do believe in him, anyone who doesnt is an idiot.

It comes down to Christians believe in Jesus being the Messiah, or the Son of God, when the Jewish dont.
