do i have to pay for the whole years gas bill?

i just moved out of my apartment. it was in a house and the bills where all split up mostly evenly. the gas bill is in one of the other tenants name. during our stay there we would ask for thats months bill and she would always say its taken care of. now that we moved out she wants us to pay for the bill, not just the last months that we where there but the whole years worth. i feel that we legaly do not need to pay for it but i want to make sure. i dont know if being in the coast guard helps at all due to the soldiers and sailers act, but i'm in the coast guard. thanks for the help.

Update:

so i have to pay for it even if they said it was taken care of and not to worry about it? we would ask all the time for it the first 6 months but after that we stopped trying, thanks again for the help.

Check your lease or rental agreement. Particularly in a situation like this, it should spell out what portion, if any, of the utility bills are included or not included in the rent, and what you are expected to pay.

    Whatever it says, do that.

If your rental agreement doesn't say anything about it - recommend you ask your XO or XPO to help you contact your District Legal Assistance Officer for advice. One thing I do know, is that you're not going to get guaranteed sound legal advice (which is what you need) on Yahoo Answers.

Yes, you must pay it. You knew you should have been paying and it was your responsibility to make sure you got the bill.

NO, the coast guard thing only allows you to break a lease with out penalty NOT get out of paying any bills.
