Noticed a stranger with shoplifted goods?

This is obviously over and done, nothing I can do about it now, but I'm wondering if I should have handled this differently. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I was at the mall with my friend, shopping for school clothes for her young daughter. We stopped for a snack in the food court. There was a table of teenage girls sitting near us. I noticed that one of them had a sweater with the security tag (yes, the big plastic thing full of ink and glass) still attached. I deliberated with my friend for a moment over what to do.

I decided to give the girls the benefit of the doubt and assume that the salesperson had just forgotten to take it off. That does happen from time to time.

I walked over to the girl as we were leaving and said, "I noticed that the salesperson forgot to remove the security tag from your friend's sweater. You should go back and have them take it off; you can't get them off yourself." It was immediately plain from her reaction that the saleslady had no idea that the sweater had been "purchased" in the first place. I feel like I should have said or done something more.

What would you have done?

Update:

Hmm. I guess I could've gone to security. The only problem is that security is in the middle of the mall, pretty far away from where I noticed these fine young ladies. I guess I don't think they would've still been there had I gone to find them. Maybe I should've popped into one of the nearby stores and asked them to call security for me. Drat.

I think that what I would have done, in this particular scenario (i.e. shoplifter outside of the shop with security not in the immediate vicinity) would be to leave quietly without saying anything, and go to the Security Desk and report it.

That way you would not be directly involved. The person would not have been alerted to the fact that she had been rumbled. And maybe the security people would be lucky and get there in time to catch her.

If it turns out to be a genuine error on the part of the shop assistant, I'm sure it would be easily rectified by producing the till receipt. I would assume that it could only be something bought earlier that day since, if the person had dressed at home, the likelihood is that the tag would have been immediately spotted, and she would have been on the way to the store to get it removed!

    Cheers

a security tag has a chip in it (like all clothes do today but there's also one embedded in the clothing) that notifies management when you walk out that exit and haven't paid for it. Usually all the bells and whistles go off and the person is confronted at the door or in the parking lot. You'd be surprised I'm sure to know that there is a room full of cameras that security guards are hired to do surveilance on within that mall..

Sure we are all aware of things that occur but if you did nothing or very little you should not question yourself or your response. You did more than others would have but you didn't need to do anything at all since the store had their own security. Btw you were much too kind in calling those shoplifters "fine ladied".

    1. He was banned for shoplifting 2. He has a history of drug use 3. You're not happy with the relationship as it is. 4. You have a gut feeling something is going on with other girls: trust your gut Answer: don't be engaged! Break up with him and work on yourself and get a relationship you dont have to question. Im sorry, but relationships do not have to be this hard

Not to sound mean, but I think you should worry about your own problems. I know that when people steal it makes the price for our merchandise go up but honestly if this girl is so accustomed to stealing than sooner or later she will get caught. What did she think she was going to do with that sweater with the ink tag on it, she is obviously an unveterned five finger discount shopper. Let her parents handle the pubishments. She will have whats coming to her soon.

Take a picture of the girl with your cellphone camera and email her picture to security, because she'll be back, and maybe they'll get her the next time?

Always report a thief, if you don't, it winds up that we all will pay for what they steal.

I'd have contacted security and pointed her out. I can't stand shoplifters. They drive up the costs for everyone else.

This is something you don't want to get involved with. It could cause you more trouble than you think.
