How many megapixals do I need for a 300dpi newspaper photo?

I am sending a picture to a newspaper and they asked that it be 300dpi. So... what do I do? Can I take a 1meg picture with my digital camera or is more detail required.

Thanks!

300 DPI? They should have given you the dimensions as well. DPI is for printing. You could print a 1x1 inch photo at 300 DPI! Usually newspapers print at lesser resolutions, too. Oh well, ask them the dimensions. Although you would probably do fine with five megapixels or more. 3 megapixels will print a 5x7 photo at 300 DPI; 7 megapixels will print an 8x10 photo at 300 DPI.

Usually newspapers require very Low resolution. So you should reduce or shrink your image to fit the newspaper specs.

I don't know how many m.p. your camera is and what size images you typically generate in a shot. But you can use S/W programs that allow you to "resize" an image to make it smaller. You'd specify the pixel dimensions (and use a "lock aspect ratio" - to keep the proportions of your image as they are in your original shot).
