What type of coat/jacket is best for Washington DC in late October?

My son's class is going to DC Oct. 21 - 24. I know we can't predict weather but typically what type of clothing/jacket is appropriate this time of year in DC? Is it usually pretty warm during the day with a jacket required am & evenings? I'm thinking just jeans, long sleeve t's/pullovers and a jacket (ex. his North Face)....does that sound reasonable?

The North Face might be too heavy for our temps at that time. He would be fine with a light, lined windbreaker with a hood in case of rain. Temps are usually in the high 60's and low 70's during the day and 50's at night. So, your selection of long sleeved tees is good. You might add a pullover style sweater, too, just in case. Layering is always a good idea when the weather starts to change.

  • Like other people have said, the DC weather, particularly in equinox seasons (spring and fall) can be rather unpredictable. I'd have him bring both a light pullover or hoodie and a heavier one, just in case. They won't take up too much suitcase room.

I hope your son has fun on his trip! I went on one of those trips to DC and it was super fun. We had really experienced teachers leading us, so we got to go to Monticello, Williamsburg, and Philly on an extended trip as well (lucky us). The bad thing was, it was May, and about 85 degrees + humidity during the day, which is about 15 degrees warmer than it ever gets in the summer where we live on the West Coast. I can't imagine how summer must be in DC :p

That sounds fine. Temps can possibly get as low as 40 F in late October in the evenings. Daytime temps are usually around 70 F.

A fleece pullover or a lightweight gortex is best. Something with a bit of lining to it, even a leather jacket works. You just don't need the goose down or qualofill.

well i used to live there so i think about in October maybe a light jacket cuz it can get breezy and windy sometimes and i would deffinantly wear jeans and a long sleeve shirt but make sure you would be able to pull the sleeves up on the long sleeve shirt just incase but he will have lots of fun i love Washington D.C.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just have a sweatshirt. It could be in the 80s or it could be in the 50s. The weather is unpredictable around here.

He should dress in layers anyway because it may be cool in the mornings and evenings and near the waterfront. Hoodie is always good because if it gets warm, he can tie it around his waist or better yet, carry it in his small backpack.

    I hope he has fun.

i think of the certainty that he became born in Hawaii and has a beginning certificates to coach it makes him a US citizen yet how can my data be triumphant while the different section has a "consensus of opinion." And for the record, I disagree with the sterilization gun thought. i don't think in compelled sterilization. i think of we could desire to continually use gadget weapons as a substitute. 2d substitute rights and all, you recognize. yet hey, be chuffed to disagree. you have that in basic terms right and that i can't hate you for exorcising it. Nor will I call you names, insult you, or attempt to demonize you. i'm keen to admit i could be incorrect and could welcome any real based debate on the region. i assume that makes me a conservative.
