    Let y = 2^(x-1). Then the equation is equivalent to 2y - y = 4. :) (Why?)

    Proceed from there (and remember you're actually solving for x, not just y!).

    section = length * Width 2304 = (x+2) * x = x^2+2x x^2+2x-2304 = 0 x = [-2+/- sqrt(2^2+4*a million*2304)]/2 = -a million+sqrt(2305) or -a million-sqrt(2305) we are talking approximately lengths so x > 0 and to that end the answer is -a million+sqrt(2305) -- that's the size of the shortest section and is approximately 47cm
