What do Mormons believe?

What does the Mormon church really believe and how does it differ than the non-denominational church's believes?

I am still a little confused on that, becasue I have a friend who admits she is a Christian, but she attends a mormon church and she does not shine Christ in all she does. However, I really don't know inside her heart(only God does). I am not saying people who don't attend a non-denominational church are bad, I am just trying to understand the differenece?

We are obedient to Christ's teachings, and strive to be "Christian" in all that we do. In fact, we provide more aid and welfare programs to the poor and needy across the world, than many other denominations. In fact, many governments of other countries come to Salt Lake City, Utah to learn about our welfare program. That could not be done if we were not well organized and functioning with dedicated members who donate time and money for the cause of Jesus Christ.

Here is a synopsis of our beliefs.

    1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

    2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.

    3. We believe that through the atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

    4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

    5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

    6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.

    7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

    8. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

    9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

    10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

    11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

    12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

    13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul--We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Possibly you are being judgmental when you say, "she does not shine Christ in all she does." Take a step back and look in the mirror and ask yourself if people can say the same thing about you. The answer is probably yes. I know I can say yes about myself, particularly when I lose my temper on the basketball court.

The fact is that active and faithful Mormons should be living by a strict moral code. In general, Mormons are known for being upstanding, kind, and generous people. Of course, we fall short sometimes since we are all human.

Bottom line, Mormons are Christians but might have some beliefs that are different than yours. Go to lds.org or mormon.org for more details.

The Mormon church or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints believes in modern revelation. They believe that God can speak to prophets in any age, and that he can and does answer individual prayers. They believe this because of a vision that Joseph Smith had as a 14-year-old boy. In his search to discover the true church, he eventually resorted to prayer, and was rewarded with a vision, where he was told to join none of the churches, that they were all corrupt.

Eventually, through revelation from God, the priesthood, ordinances, and plain and precious doctrines that had been lost from Christianity were restored, and Joseph was commanded to start this new church, a restoration of the early Christian church.

The Bible is and has always been the first book in our canon of scripture. Joseph Smith was shown in a vision where to find a second book of scripture, what we call the Book of Mormon. Started by ancient Israelites who came by ship to the Americas circa 570 BC, the book tells of the rise and fall of the Nephite civilization, how they prospered when they were righteous and how they lost everything when they were wicked. It also tells about the visit of the resurrected Christ to the Americas. Here is a link to an online version:

Some of the basic doctrines that were restored by revelation include a premortal existance, a spirit world where people go when they die, the eventual resurrection and judgment of all people, three heavens with increasing degrees of glory, baptism as a priesthood ordinance and covenant with God, administered only to men and women who are above the age of consent, the innocence of little children, the Gift of the Holy Ghost given by the laying on of hands, and the organization that existed at the time of Christ, namely Apostles and Prophets. Additionally, Joseph Smith was told in a revelation to abstain from tobacco, and strong drink, and to abstain from coffee and tea, as these were detrimental to the body and soul. The ordinances and covenants of the ancient Jewish Temple were also restored.

The mormon church believes that Jeses Christ is the son of God. That God speaks to prophets today just as he has spoken in the past. They believe the bible to be the word of God and also the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. If you really want to know what they believe in read the Book of Mormon

Mormonism is considered to be a marginal denomination of Christianity. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints generally refer to themselves as LDS, but also use the term "Mormon" since that is what the rest of society usually calls them (the term was originally used in a denigrating manner).

The core teachings are included in the following thirteen articles of faith, but you can find out more, especially what we teach, by going to the sites listed and actually reading the lesson manuals and magazines.

1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

Add: It should be noted that, like all Christians, we are imperfect and exercise our agency (will) with regard to living our lives. People often judge religions by the lives of imperfect people who do not necessarily live their religion to the best of their ability.

    Galatians 1:8

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

According to the Word of God they are accursed.

Get out while you still can! It's not the Christianity you know so well.

  • That they will become gods. Just as Satan promised in the Garden.
