Your battery is no good and needs to be replaced. They only last on average about 3 years. Now a replacement can be expensive. Your laptop should work fine without the battery, just plug it in. If you want a replacement search google for HP presario r3000 battery. There are plenty of dealers out there. Try to stick with original HP part. Some aftermarket batteries have been known to cause major trouble. Also you can check on Ebay for it. Again stick with an HP part and avoid used. You should save alot. There should be an HP part number on the battery that you can check to make sure you get the correct battery.

take your batery out and leave your computer running while plugged in, sometimes a faulty battery will cause the system to shut down, even when plugged in. Batteries get week with age. One tip, on your next battery that you get, only plug it it when it needs to be charged. Laptop batteries are not like house phone batteries, they don't "cutt off" chargeing once they are full, the power will keep cramming and cramming power into the batter, does your computer get really hot by the battery also? prime example. So next time, only plug in the system with the battery in if you need to charge it up, other than that, just leave it out and plugged into the wall, saves you time hassle and money ;)

5 years is pretty long for a laptop, especially if you haven't changed the battery in a while. Just buy a new battery, or maybe even a new laptop. Laptops that are being made now have long lasting battery life, and it might be more helpful if you buy a new laptop than having to deal with the hassle of new batteries. Now, I understand that laptops can be pricey, but in the long run, it might save you time, effort and money. :]

The typical laptop battery only lasts between 18-24 months so it's most likely time to be replaced.

Your going to have to buy a new battery, trust me. Over time, a battery wears out, it has a limited number of charging cycles, just like your car tire, the more you use it the faster you wear it out, but if you dont use the discharge the battery with in a week it will wear out itself.
