Lewis Structures and Resonance Hybrids?

Write the lewis structure, including all major resonance contributors, and the resonance hybrid for CH3CO2-Na+

My professor provided me with the answer to this question, but I'm confused about the structure. The CH3C(O2)- is in brackets and the Na+ is outside the brackets (on the top right, like a charge). Can someone explain why this is? I thought only charges could go in that position, not molecules.

Thanks a lot for any help :)

The Na+ was probably written outside on a bracket because it is ionically bonded to the organic molecule. The CH3CO2 part is all covalently bonded, but there's a negative overall charge, which means that anionic molecule can ionically bond to a cation, in this case, Na+.

I remember these. The best bet is to draw them only if they ask specifically for each one. Otherwise drawing even a single one (opt for the 'best/most likely' if possible) is ok if they don't specify. Some structures like the carbonate anion, or benzene ring using the resonance hybrid makes more sense than drawing each one out individually. Of course I'm not setting your exam so ask the administrator.
