Caroline or Carolyn-which is better?
Which is better and why?
I like the nickname Carly for Carolyn--saw that on TV and thought it was adorable, and you don't hear the name Carolyn very often. Caroline is a little more sophisticated, however.

Caroline does seem more formal. According to babynames.com it means "beautiful woman".
Carolyn on the other hand, is a little less formal. According to babynames.com it means "little womanly one". It also has a variation spelled Karolyn.
Its seems the trend these days is towards the formal, older names. And with your inclination to shorten the name to Carly, I would go with the more formal Caroline. I think you'll also find more children's books with characters names Caroline.
