What weather is needed to create amazing pink sky in the morning?

I was woken up early last week by the cat and happened to look out of the window to see that everything was literally glowing pink! It was amazing! I guess it was near sunrise or just before I guess and the sky was a brilliant salmon pink colour... I didn't have my camera else I would have taken a picture!! :o(

I'd like to be prepared next time with the camera so would like to know what weather to look out for?!

The saying goes "red sky in the morning, Shepherds warning"... Does that mean I need to keep an eye out for approaching storms after nice weather?!

I've seen a salmon pink sky before at sunSET, but never sunrise...

Angelboy explanation is one of the several used to explain the saying "red sky at night ... " But the truth is that the saying existed long before we understood how thermodynamic was working in our atmosphere.

The reason the sky is red during the evening is the same reason the sky is red during the morning and ... the same reason the sky is, otherwise, blue! It is called the Rayleigh scattering:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayleigh_scattering

Perhaps the sky is a bit more reddish at night because, during the day, the heat of the sun evaporated a lot of moisture in the layer right above the sea but ... conditions are different in different places. For example, at night, cold air sinks into the valleys from the hilltops and that's where the the relative humidity will be the higher. It even creates a wind called a katabatic wind. And that skews the view of the shepherd ... is he on the hill or in the valley?

“Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning”

Red sky at night, sailors delight.

When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.

Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.

A red sunrise reflects the dust particles of a system that has just passed from the west. This indicates that a storm system may be moving to the east. If the morning sky is a deep fiery red, it means a high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain is on its way.
