I live in Central Oregon and we get catsears (I am pretty sure that is what they are) Easily mistaken for dandelions. They resemble dandelions but get stickers on them and furry leaves. I provided a link about dandelions, at the bottom of the page on the link, there are links about false dandelions. I hope this helps answer your question.

interesting question. it actually took me somewhere else. as far as a here in n.m. the plants do not pick, or have stickers. don't even think the leaves poke. and they even sell them at the farmers market for eating. used to like rubbing them on my chin as a kid.
now if i consider myself a dandelion, i stay away from prickers. well sometimes prefer another dandelion.
