HR Question: Local Candidates Only?
When a company specifies "Local Candidates Only"
What exactly is implied?
I've seen on applications where Local U.S. Citizen is a checkmark, so does this mean that Local Candidates only refers to Citizens that do not require sponsorship for VISA or does that imply living within the local geography of that business?
I'm not a Human Resource trained or HR educated individual, I'm just the "Computer guy" so I'm just curious on the technical disclosure of how human resource teams across the country evaluate the definition of Local Candidates only.

George's answer is 100% correct. "Local candidates only" is a warning to candidates from outside the area that the company will not pay relocation benefits for the position. So, if I'm hiring in Seattle, I want local candidates that can come to me for an interview. It makes it extremely difficult if someone is applying from outside the area and needs to be accommodated based on their travel schedule to come see me for an interview. We don't pay relocation benefits at our company and use that line in ads all the time.

No. You have no right to a job or a job offer. They made a selection. Though we are recovering, the economy is still tough. I recently hired someone. We had one position available and over 200 applicants. My selecting one meant turning down dozens of people who would have been qualified. That is the way life works. I wish we had the possibility of full employment, but our economy has never had that status. Keep at it. Get your resume out there. Take some classes. Network. Years ago, I spent a few months unemployed and discouraged, but ended up in one of the most enjoyable jobs I have ever had. Stay strong.

There are so many people working from home and sometimes working for companies in other States. They are probably looking for someone that is actually local and don't want to hire someone that works from home.

"Local candidates only" means there is no relocation allowance. You need to live within commuting distance to the work site.
