How long does a company have rights to its name after changing it?

The name I have come up with is actually a well know magazine company's that changed its name about a year ago....

    Names are "Trademarks" and they last as long as the brand exists (as long as they were registered). They don't expire until the brand expires. If they changed their name then I don't know if you can use it. If it is in a totally different kind of industry it is possible you can use it, but you need to consult with an intellectual property lawyer about that.
