What do you tell someone who says this...?

What do you tell someone who says that the phrase "everything happens for a reason" is just something people say when they can't think of anything better.

I dont know what else to tell em, the person Im talking about is extremely pessimistic by the way.

time makes all things better. If we didnt learn from our mistakes, everything, everywhere would be taken for granted.

tell him that's just what he believes, but that really does everything happen for a reason (or whatever you believe). tell him that if he doesnt look at the bright side of things, eventually there wont be any more bright sides. tell him to cheer up, because life goes on no matter what happens.

Tell him to suck it up and quit being so negative or you'll give him a reason to be pessimistic.
