Does it say in the Bible that a man is supposed to work to support the family? Please give verses.?

I have had this disagreement with someone close to me and they believe that the man does not have to work to support their family. If anyone can find where it says that the man doesn't have to or if anyone finds where the man is to support the family. Please give me the scriptures. Thank you.

    1 Timothy 5:8

But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

We have to remember that Apostle Paul is usually speaking

about/ to saved members of the church.

If you know an unsaved man who is not caring for his family,

throwing this verse at them does little.

Speaking to them about Jesus would be the first step

in fixing the problem. After that, things work out, God will help him.

I've read all 12 of your answers so far and they all almost are giving you 1 Timothy 5:8.

But what if you WANT him to stay home and care for the Children while you and your exceedingly high paying job, takes care of the bills?

The Bible says that if a man doesn't work, he shouldn't eat. But what if a "man" was the Wo"man" who cared for the kids.

Times change. I'm not suggesting that men become losers and quit work and make the wife work 2 or 3 jobs to support the family, but what IF the woman makes 5 times as much as the average person, shouldn't "they" decide what They want, and what makes THEM happy?

    I say they should!

2 How should a husband treat his wife?

3 What responsibilities does a father have? <*

4 What is the wife's role in the family?

5 What does God require of parents and of children?

6,7 What is the Bible's view of separation and of divorce?

    1. Because it is the right thing to do. (Eph. 6:1) Sometimes you do something just because it is right. 2. There was a promise that those who obey their parents would live long and prosper. (Eph. 6:3, Deut. 5:16, Exodus 20:12) 3. It is a "wise" thing to do. (Proverbs 13:1) 4. Because it is pleasing to God. (Col. 3:20) 5. You can't be saved if you disobey your parents (unless your parents lead you to otherwise disobey God's word). (Rom. 1:28-32) (Note the phrase "in the Lord" in Eph 6:1. This indicates that you are to obey parents as they instruct you things in harmony with God's word.) 6. Parents are placed in a position of authority over the children. 7. Because God said to! (see all of the verses above) To disobey your parents is to also disobey God.

1Timothy 5:8 "If any man does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

While this does not use the phrase "work to support the family", it clearly supports that principle that a man is to support his family.

In the 21st Century. Societ is based on Equality. The woman has just as much right and responsibility to bring home income to the household as the man. Or, if a couple decides to do so, the man or woman can stay at home and tend to the house. Either is a very daunting task.

Many of the verses have been given already but if you want some great practical videos on the topic check these out...

  • You have been given the scriptures by many.

Aside from scripture, what man is a man, that does not work to provide for and make the world better for his family?

You can find such a command in the First book of Timothy, I think it is chapter 5...........find your own verse, it is not committed to my memory.

OR, you can take the modern attitude of many.............."let the government do it".

For me, the decision could be made with a single question:

Are they your children or are they the government's children? Sadly, far too many "men" SELL their children to the government.

God said, the man is the head of the house. Not meaning that he should rule with an iron fist. He is suppose to lovingly take care of his family . He is suppose to make sure everything is in tact. All this and treating his spouse as they are in God's sight(ONE).
