Knitting in the round...stitches backwards?

Ok I have only been knitting for a few weeks. I have finished two pairs of booties and am working on a matching hat. I am using circular needles and did really well to start with. I knitted 30 rounds and then I haven't been able to work on it again in almost a week. I picked it up again this afternoon and started knitting again I've done 2 rounds and my stitches are on the wrong side!! My knit (V side) is on the purl (bumpy) side and the purl on the knit side! What did I do and how do I fix it? Is it hopeless? Am I gonna have to start over?! HELP!

This is very easy to do, but there is a way around this. Right now, you have a choice of leaving them as they are (adds a bit of personal touches, right?) or rip out the wrong rows, put the stitches back on the needles and start from where you made the error. Not as scary as it sounds... I've done it many times! haha

When you picked up the knitting, you went in the wrong direction. It is easy to know which way to go if you watch for a couple of clues:

    1. When you pick up knitting in the round, you will ALWAYS be working on the side of the circle nearest you. That is, with the right side of the fabric facing outwards, you will be working on the close side, and the other side of the circle will be on the other side from your hands.

    2. The working yarn (from the ball) will ALWAYS be attached to the needle in your right hand. If the yarn is attached to the left needle... turn it around!

    3. If you are doing plain knitting (no purl), which is also called "stocking stitch", the front of the fabric will be smooth (bumps on the back). If you look closely, the stitches will make a "V" -- and you know that this is the side that should be facing you -- on the outside of your work. (this depends on the kind of fabric you are making too)

If you were to follow the rule about the yarn being attached to the right-hand needle, then you should be alright. That rule never fails.

You probably turned the knitting inside out. The only thing you can do to correct this is to rip the knitting until you get to where you made the mistake. Then make sure the knitting side faces you. I know it is more work, but you would feel much better for having done this.

yeah, i have done this before. you are just knitting on the wrong side! you either have to rip it out, or make it part of the pattern
