Friend's puppy is unable to urinate and keeps vomiting...?

My friend is on his way to the vet as I type this but he lives in the country and has a good drive ahead of him. He woke up this morning and his 9 month old Rottweiler, Carlie, couldn't urinate and kept throwing up. Carlie has all her shots and was in great health up until today. Any information or knowledge about this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Update:

Yes, she is purebred.

He is with the vet now. So far all we know is that her bladder is not swollen.

Update 2:

Ok, apparently Carlie urinated without assistance at the vet and they were able to get a sample of it. He says it looks like there are white strands in the urine...

Update 3:

...the "white strands" in the urine is an infection...

This is a medical emergency. I hope you post what they find out at the vet when known.

Thanks for the updates. Hopefully it's not going to be anything other than a virus. Dogs can get a stomach virus just like people. Seems like everytime I board my schauzers at my groomers, when they come home they have a few days of diarhea and vomiting, then my Rottweiler will get the same symptoms. They of course go to the vet, but pretty much all the vet does is tell me to treat the symptoms with boiled chicken and white rice, pepto bismol and pedialyte. So now I just start the diet and they always clear up in a few days.

Please keep posting. I hope that Carlie get's okay quickly.

UTI's are actually very common in all breeds. I know my Rottie has had a couple in her life and the first when she was only a few months old.

Maybe a good round of antibiotics will have her back to her old self. I would also recommend that her owner get some yogurt to give her daily. This will help her gut deal with the antibiotics. I buy the natural, plain yogurt.

First of all, Parvo is a virus that attacks the lining of the digestive system. It causes the animal to not be able to absorb nutrients or liquids. When the puppy contracts parvo, they often have severe diarrhea, vomiting and lethargy.

Parvo is characterized by severe bloddy diarrhea that has a very foul odor and is sometimes yellow in color.

It is true that Rotties and Dobermans, and other black and tan breeds are more prone to parvo, and succumb faster to it. The virus can affect ALL breeds though.

So it is definately possible she has parvo. Parvo is carried by other dogs, and is highly contagious. So if she was around any dogs that had it she just may have it as well. The Parvo Virus can also remain infectious in fecal material in the ground. If conditions are favorable it can remain there for up to 9 months.

There are also other reasons...alot of female dogs get Urinary Tract Infections. UTI's are actually very common in puppies.

    Symptoms are usually:

    Bloody urine

    Urine that smells really bad

    Straining while urinating

No energy; just lays around a lot

Lower abdomen is tender to the touch

    Urinating all over the house

Hope this helps...and things work for the little one! I have a rottie...so there is a special place in my heart for those guys!

in basic terms like people, some dogs have a tender abdomen or may even vomit on an empty abdomen. as long because of fact the dogs is ingesting, ingesting, performing commonly, showing no different signs and indications of ailment, and showing no strengthen in frequency of the vomiting, there is many times no reason to rigidity. constantly seek for advice out of your vet in the experience that your dogs's vomiting is continual, maintains for better than an afternoon, or is accompanied by potential of different indications, which includes weightloss, decreased urge for food, diarrhea, or extreme water intake.

That could be a number of things, but the vomiting would make me suspect parvo. Rotties and other black and tan breeds tend to be more susceptible to this disease. Hope the puppy makes it OK.
