Bet you can't name a GOOD song from THIS decade?
I sure can't - can you prove me wrong?
My first thought is that no good songs have been written since 1969 - but I actually do like some 70's and 80's music. So maybe no good songs have been made since 1989 - but I do like some albums from the 90's, like Tom Petty's.
But I cannot think of any good music that's been made in the last 9 years. Any suggestions? Please no heavy metal, grunge, hip-hop, rap, country or boy bands.
Yes, for the purposes of this question, I will be the sole arbiter of whether a song is "good" or not. But if you can prove me wrong, I will award the 10 points...good luck!
No winners so far. I stand by my original theory.
Lots of songs I've never heard of, so I may have to check a few out before I make my ruling.
But John Mayer's "Waiting For the World to Change"? REALLY? That could be the worst song not just from this decade, but EVER.

Um, there is a ton of wonderful music being made right now. Just because it's not on the iTunes Top 100 doesn't mean it's not worth listening to. The mainstream music of this decade is absolute trash, but the more underground stuff is truly amazing art. With that being said, here are some great songs from this decade:
"We Were Born the Mutants Again with Leafling" — of Montreal
"Cato as a Pun" — of Montreal
"The Past is a Grotesque Animal" — of Montreal
"The Purple Bottle" — Animal Collective
"Rebellion (Lies)" — The Arcade Fire
"Nonpareil of Favor" — of Montreal
If I could name a top artist for the entire decade, I'd definitely go with of Montreal. They're innovative, fun, and brilliant.
Obviously, people's tastes differ. What I like may be completely different from what you like. Music taste is totally subjective. Don't just listen to the first thirty seconds of these songs and write them off because they're different from what you would usually listen to. Give them a chance. Judging by the fact that you put six types of music to NOT suggest, you seem very narrow-minded. Prove me wrong.

Come to Scotland.
There is so much excellent music over here. We have one of the best trad scenes going. Brittany is also great, especially with their all-night festivals. And Hungary and the Balkans do trad-fusion so well.
My attitude is that I don't want tunes that are merely good cluttering up my brain. I want the best in there. And fortunately there are still pockets that haven't been tampered with by industry suits. It just takes some looking.
The McDades (Canada)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehJMhwHv-Yc
(I don't know when this tune was composed. It might not qualify as being composed in the last decade, but it will give you an idea....)
Kerekes Band (Hungary), moving on from trad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctYZmPVxscI
The Black Diamond Express (Scotland), messed up blues
Source(s): Reading this over made me laugh at myself. The McDades came across on the television, while the Kerekes Band and BDE were both support for other bands.... I didn't have to look for them at all. Whether you like this sort of thing or not, keep looking for what works for you. Good music needs our support. --------------- If you can't hear the quality in the above, do you have the ears to at least recognize how talented these guys are? They're raising the bar and redefining the direction of the tradition. People will be playing their tunes for generations. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=EFFD6DDF22... - 1 decade ago
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: We Call Upon the Author.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Midnight Man.
Steve Morse Band: Mechanical Frenzy.
Iron Maiden: Different World.
Many other songs by these artists and more.

Hmm...
The National - "All dolled-Up in straps"
Tom Waits - "Sins of My Father" (This is probably not 90's, but it's after the 70's)
The 22-20's - "Why Don't You Do It For Me?"
Blonde Redhead - "Spring and By Summer Fall"
Butch Walker - "Ladies and Gentleman... "The Let's-Go-Out-Tonites!" "
Frightened Rabbit - "The Twist"
I'd say The Blow, JayMay, Gramatik, and a whole slew of others, but if you're a big AC/DC or Rush fan you're not going to like them.

Have you ever turned off the radio and looked anywhere else? Because I'm getting the impression that you haven't, since you're closed-minded enough to think that there hasn't been anything good since 1989. Can you prove me wrong?
And last nine years? But too easy, don't you think?
Great Expectation by The Gaslight Anthem. Came out last year, I think.

The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song by The Flaming Lips. Came out two years ago, I think. It's trippy and weird, but fun. I especially love the lyrics.

Fresh Blood by Eels. Came out his year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOapjBTqLLs
Over It by Dinosaur Jr. I LOVE this song ferociously. It got me out of a really lame time in my life.

I Know What I Am by Band Of Skulls. Fun song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tl3zhbWrBY
Intervention by Arcade Fire. This one is hit and miss. Some people hate Arcade Fire. Some love them.

Many Shades Of Black by The Raconteurs. I think it's a fun song.

There's just a few. Have fun!

Hm, that's tough. But I'll give it a shot. Easy enough to pick ones that don't fit into those genres, considering I really don't listen to any of them. Now, let's see what I have...
I don't know that you'll like any of these, but f*ck it, I do:
No Longer- The Kooks
Stranger Things Have Happened- Foo Fighters
The Weight of Her- Butch Walker.

Anything by mewithoutYou, go listen to them!
I too love 60s music, but post '63 only and also 70s music, but I also adore the previously mentioned band. they are really, truly talented.
Please give them a listen, they sound like ir the Barenakedladies, and Neil Young wrote strange songs about food that are nice and happy and beautiful, then sung them together.

If you're into classic rock just look up bands from the Woodstock era. But bands from the past 9 years would be... Audioslave (amazing supergroup), a newer band called Crooked X (some of their songs have a classic rock feel to them), and Linkin Park (I would recommend their older stuff because Minutes to Midnight was a joke compared to Hybrid Theory and Meteora).

Does not compute. I mean there are so many good songs from the past 9 years.
My favorites:
The Shins - The Past and Pending
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FTUDgbw-04
My Morning Jacket - Gideon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4HvIwhDRsM
Andrew Bird - Scythian Empires
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSBLSfhVSR0
The Verve - Love Is Noise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quEyuyEc2jY
Brett Dennen - Desert Sunrise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiMtA1wun-s
Colin Hay - Beautiful World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe3RqgnXaT4
Counting Crows - When I Dream Of Michelangelo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYM_Kx1-I4c
Keane - Nothing In My Way
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5l-GSDo72c
I could go on and that was only one song per band.

OMG i find this sort of question grossly offensive. You classic rock worshippers need to find the nearest time machine and go back to 1970 where you can be relevant.
There's just SO MANY I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN
Anti-Flag: Operation Iraqi Liberation, F*ck the Flag, Post War Breakout
Paramore: Misery Business, Ignorance, Fences, Born For this
Bad Religion: Let Them Eat War, Sorrow, Kyoto Now!, Germs of Perfection
Rise Against: Savior, Drones, Prayer of the Refugee
The Used: Liar Liar, Wake the Dead
Taking Back Sunday: Cute Without the "e", Liar (it takes one to know one), Timberwolves at New Jersey
System of a Down: Toxicity, Chop suey!, This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song
Just to name a few. That's far less than 1% of the good songs to come out of the last decade. Get with the times my man. Ignorance is not evidence. You can't just listen to only music from prior to 1989 and then claim that no good music has come out since 1989.
