What should I make for my nephew?

My brother's fiance just found out she's pregnant. She's not due until May so I have lots of time to decide how to spoil him/her rotten. I'm thinking of making the baby something for when (s)he is born. Something for the nursery, maybe. The thing is, I'm not all that "domestic." The one thing I'm good at is scrapbooking, but that would be too easy. I'd like to surprise everyone and make something I've never done and prove that I've got it in me somewhere. Any suggestions for something sweet but simple?

One of my favorite baby gifts was a ceramic plaque my best friend painted that says Precious Baby. She kept it until my daughter was born and added the time, place, weight, and length before she got it fired. There's a bunch of DIY ceramic shops around the US and you can make it as simple or detailed as you like. Plus it's pretty cheap to do.

You could also make a pregnancy scrapbook with pictures of the happy couple, excited family members, growing belly, baby shower, ultrasound photos, etc. since that's your niche.

I made my daughter a black and white painting with different patterns and she loved it. You also don't have to be too artistic to do this.

Just be creative and as long as it's made with love I'm sure your niece or nephew will love it. Good luck!

If you can crochet you should make him/her a baby blanket. That is something very special that they can use and keep forever. My mother-in-law made one for my daughter when she was born and I thought that was so sweet. My daughter is 3 now so I put it in her keepsake box. Someday she can give it to her daughter or grandaughter.

Buy raw, unfinished wood...something ( letters for the name on the wall, toy box, wall shelves, bookshelf) And paint/varnish it. You can use stencils, sponges, or even decoupage pictures onto it.
