Need to fill in our pond?
We are going to be moving an renting out our home. I was told that due to liability issues I need to fill in our 800 gal pond. We also have a 1.5 foot waterfall.
We would like to be able to "unfill" the pond at a future date if we were to move back in. This pond was our first family project when we bought the property and hate losing it.
If not, do we just use soil and plant things in the soil?

Why not just fence in around the pond? I'm assuming the liability issue is that some child could drown in the pond...so why not fence it in like people do with swimming pools? If that is not a possibility I would grab some bags of styrofoam peanuts (not the cornstarch ones because they will disintegrate if they get wet) and double bag them in a garbage bag and use it as filler for the pond. Add dirt on top and then plant with your choice of plants (ground-cover plants like ivy would be cheap and easy). Also, don't forget to either remove or protect your pump.

Empty and put a deck over the top. Some kind of pool cover may also work. And fencing is a good idea. Draining it may work to keep the pond clean and mosquito free.
But check again with your insurance agent. They no doubt have advice on this because they don't want to pay a claim.
