Shaun Burgoyne has quit - it's official?

Reported in the Advertiser today, Burgoyne will seek a trade to Hawthorn, or, failing that will nominate for the pre-season draft!

What should Hawthorn trade to get him and/or what should Port request?

I think they're at a very real risk of stuffing it up like they did with Nick Stevens - asking for too much, fail to make a deal and end up losing their best player with nothing in return.

Update:

Um Sandiee, I'm not sure you understand. Shaun plays for Port. And he has way more than one year left in him...??

Update 2:

Yet again, more words of wisdom from the Icon of Wrestling.

Of course you could ask for the best deal possible. That would be: Mitchell, Roughead, Franklin, Hodge and maybe Sewell in return for Burgoyne. But guess what - you aren't going to get the best deal possible.

And you didnt get screwed with Stevens. Port refused to be dictated to by Collingwood, out of principle. Collingwood made some (maybe less than reasonable) offers in respect of that potential trade, and Port decided to refuse them, so they received nothing in return.

They do not have bargaining power when the player has quit the club. If they are smart, they will take whatever they can get for him - because even a third round draft pick is better than nothing!

Update 3:

Rogue - Since your (outdated) source was put to press, it has come out that he has requested Hawthorne.

And Williams has conceded that he will lose him - there is no fighting. Williams said last night that they will have to try and work out a trade.

DAMN - you ALMOST sounded like you knew something then...

(and they don't ever get "money" or "big bucks"... there is no "selling" players in the AFL.)

Update 4:

Go on Icon - explain how you have a superior understanding... I dare you.

Because from what you write, and what I write, no-one except maybe STFU or Footy Legend are going to believe you!

Update 5:

Hellomoto - welcome to my question! So pleased you have chosen to answer the question with something sensible instead of just placing a . to get points!

It is official, according to Burgoyne's manager: "There is no turning back," said Burgoyne's manager Ben Williams last night. "He has made up his mind for a change after nine fantastic seasons, including a premiership, at Port Adelaide which will always hold a special place for Shaun."

Update 6:

ICON you are ridiculous! I have never said that my education made me better than anyone else here. You just have some problem with me because I went to the premier football school in Australia. I insult your education not because of where you went to school, but because of how you write - it makes it so difficult for anyone to follow a thing you say.

And how would you know how many years of football I have played? And how would you know whether I grew up in a football loving family? In fact, I still coach football every week! But that doesnt mean that I know any more or less about football than you. What does indicate that is the things that I write on here - and the things you write on here. You give a very clear indication from most of your comments that you have a very limited grasp of the sport.

Damn, I really want Shaun Burgoyne at St Kilda! Hawthorn already have their fast, skillful player in Rioli, we need a player with pace!

If he doesn't go to Hawthorn I actually think there could be a Macguire or Luke Ball trade to Port Adelaide for Burgoyne or Pearce or to Essendon for Andrew Lovett - we really need a skillful player with pace.

Although, if he goes to Hawthorn I'm just trying to think of who they would trade. Definitely not the captain Mitchell, definitely not Hodge (who just re-signed), they couldn't trade Sewell with the form he is in. Do they really need another midfielder? They have Bateman, Osbourne, Young, Tuck and these type of guys to fill in - of course they are no Shaun Burgoyne but I see him fitting well into a side like St Kilda over Hawthorn.

I can't wait for Shaun Burgoyne to come to Melbourne, what a gun player he is.

Its a bit of a risk for any club taking on a player with dodgy knees.

Is he being a cry baby because of not getting the Port Captaincy.

Possible trade for him: Xavier Ellis and Thomas Murphy and a 3rd round draft pick for Shaun Burgoyne.

Shaun Burgoyne has asked to be traded to a Melbourne based team but Mark Williams has said that they will do what they can to retain him at Port Adelaide as he is obviously a key player. They wont give him up without a fight or at least a LOT of money!

I doubt they will let him go into the draft where he will end up at Melbourne. Port will get big bucks or a good trade deal - no neccessarily Hawks.

I agree with Andy K, sending Mark Williams to Port could work it's a pretty fair trade I reckon. Both pretty good players just about in the same ladder spot. Or maybe they could send someone like a small forward or midfielder to Port.

It is official. It's good that the hawks finished so low this year, because they will have some decent trade bait to offer the Power.I hate to bring up the (rats leaving the sinking ship)analogy but it looks like it's happening to the power again. It would serve Burgoynes right if he is forced to enter the draft and ends up at Freo or Melbourne.

The Hawks should trade Mark Williams who did the famous choke signal to Port last year, It would work well for the Hawks too who don't really need another leading forward as we have Buddy & Roughy already. I think its a pretty fair trade for both teams.

Why wouldn't you ask for the best deal possible, but its unlikely any team will offer a player of Burgoyne's quality to trade so we will probably get screwed again like with Stevens.

It really hurts you Harold that i have a superior understanding of the game than you doesn't it Harold!

Just the fact that i have played many more years of football than you & have grown up in a football loving family is all i need to say really Harold. Going to a private school doesnt make you better than everyone else so give up on acting like your better than every user here

You didnt have to write an essay Harold im just sick of you reporting all my answers & hating on Port all the time

I also find it sad that you continue to insult people because of a few spelling/grammar errors in their answers grow up mate

Man Hawthorn are being way to aggresive with the trades they are putting false hope in players eyes making them leave their club and then going in the pre season draft.
