Should I go with AMD or Intel when upgrading my computer?
I'm looking to upgrade my computer and was wondering if I should go with AMD or Intel. I kind of don't use this computer much since I have a MacBook now, but it's kind of a hobby and it would be nice to have something a little quicker. I currently have an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (old!).
I'm not going to do any overclocking or anything, just a basic computer to maybe play some games. I will need to replace the motherboard and RAM, but will probably keep everything else (don't think I'll have any issues).
I've always uses AMD but my MacBook has an Intel CoreDuo 2.0GHz and it is great. I haven't really kept up with PC stuff so I'm wondering what y'all suggest.

Well, if this is a hobby, I would look in to overclocking, it is fun to see what new hardware is capable of.
In the Intel's i7 department, these chips were made to be overclocked, literally. The i7920 comes stock at 2.67 ghz and easily clocks to at minimum 3.8 ghz.
With that said, it all comes down to price and point of use.
AMD is known for making cheaper processors and motherboards. The x4 is a very good quad core processor but is limited to dual channel as are the new i7's (700/800 series) and the i5.

So, it is really up to you. The best out there right now is the i7 975, which will fall to the i9 comming out in February (6 core processing).
The cheaper is the i5/ Core 2 Quad / AMD Phenom II x4
Out of those I would definitely go with the Phenom if those were my choices of the latter.
A new i7 920 costs about 279$ and an x58 motherboard is around 250$. Whereas you can get a phenom for 200 and a motherboard for 150-200$, but you have less processing power.
So bottom line is, the i7 920 and up are the best processors in the market. They use a qpi interface as does AMD but they also utilize triple channel memory. When I say that, I don;t mean that they can just run ddr3, I mean that they run 2 sets of 3 ddr3 sticks, which makes it immensly faster than 2x2 sticks of ddr3, which even though the name is ddr3 ram (due to the speed) still runs in dual channel.
I hope I didn't confuse you.
Best processor = Intel i7 9 series, not the i5, not the i7 7 or 8 series, not the core 2 quad.
Best Price = AMD Phenom II x4 965/955
So the difference in those is pretty big, regarding the ram.
It is also very easy to overclock an i7, I cannot stress that enough.
If I were you I would go with a i7 920 and overclock it to 4ghz. Think about it. A i7 975 comes at what 3.2 ghz and 6.4 qpi? You overclock the 920 to 4ghz and 7.2 qpi and you have a 1,000$ processor for 279$.
But that is just me, if you want to save money and get a top line processor then get the Phenom II x4, but the i7 outperforms them all.
