Update:

Im sticking to Eagle Pack food. ive been told by vets, breeders, friends, relatives... yes i should... and no i shouldnt... i guess it just depends on my personal preference. ugh i hate that. i just want to do right by my puppy!

i was in the same dilemma for my great dane pup.

everyone has a different opinion and it gets confusing :)

the most important thing when u are choosing a food for your dane pup is to check for the protein content. the protein should be less than 23% preferably. high protein diet should be avoided so that the growth is slow and steady. if a dane grows too fast, theres a high chance of bone and joint problems later in life.

so choose any good quality dogfood (meat as the first ingredient, no corn, etc etc) with protein around 23%.

eagle pack is a good brand. but there are better options within the same price range.

Absolutely NO puppy food not even large breed for a Dane puppy. The calcium levels are too high as are the protein levels and fat levels. This can lead to serious growth issues.

Also as far as Eagle Pack is concerned this is an over rated food. It use ot be in high regard for feeding Danes but is no longer. It has become a high priced mediocre food. There are much better foods out there at an equal or cheaper price.

Some good choices..Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul regular or large breed adult formula, Innova (not EVO), Solid Gold, some Merricks,Fromm,Premium Edge,California Natural,Wellnees Super 5 Mix Chicken just to name a few.

Despite the higher protein level Taste of the Wild Pacific Salmon is ok for a Dane puppy...the reason being is it is grain free and derives it's protein from meats not grains.Dogs are designed to process proteins from meats and not grains. This is why protein levels in foods that contain any kind of grain need to be carefully monitored.Meats are natural proteins and easily processed and utilized by dogs, grains are an unnatural protein source that dogs aren't designed to process or utilize.

In foods such as Chicken Soup, etc you need to look for a food that has not over 24% protein 14% fat.

Stay away from foods that contain corn, wheat, soy. look for foods that contain meat as at least the first 2-3 ingredients.

You need to remember that a Dane is a giant breed NOT a large breed and should not be fed in the same manner as a large breed puppy. Improper feeding can lead to some seriosu growth issues some of which could cripple your Dane for life.

The only Dane puppy feeding advice you should be taking is from knowledgable Dane people..not the vet (vets have very little to no nutritional knowledge for any dog breed/mix let alone Danes and don't get me wrong I've worked for vets for over 37 years and very much respect most, however I would never take their advice on feeding & nutrition especially for my Danes) I suggest that you join the online group DOL (Danes online) http://dolforum.com/ or the Yahoo group Great Dane food study http://groups.yahoo.com/group/greatdanefoodstudy

Source(s): own/shown Danes for over 26 years, vet tech for 37 years, extensive study in canine nutrition & feeding especially giant breeds

I'd wait until 8-12 months before switching to an adult food. Rule of thumb for dogs is a puppy becomes a dog at 1 year old, but larger breeds age faster. Oh and looks for something other than Pedigree its like feeding your dog roadkill.

Neither... It should probably be fed on Giant breed puppy... I feed a natural diet instead. But if you are going to feed dry at least make sure it is a good brand with meat listed first on the ingredients list.

ADDED: My latest dog grew up on eagle pack large beed puppy as a pup (dobermann) - GREAT product, and i am pretty sure they do a giant breed version, which would be much better for your dane as you have to be very careful they do not grow too quickly, which can cause all kinds of problems later. So definitely switch to the one that is specifically recommended by Eagle, for your type of dog.

Good luck with your baby, its sounds like you are willing to spend the money needed for good nutrition (Eagle is NOT cheap, i know), and i agree with you, everyone gives differing advice, so it can be tricky! Thats why i didnt ram my opinions on natural diet down your throat. Everyone seems to think that their way is the ONLY way. This is just not the case. There are pro's and con's to lots of things when it comes to feeding.

I have heard that it is bad if Great Danes grow too fast. They develop major leg and hip problems. Maybe a great quality Large Breed Adult food and then add Omega 3 fish oil. I would ask your vet

Puppy food. It has far more nutrients in it than adult food and the Danes are putting on a huge amount of bone very quickly. Contact an actual Dane Breeder if you can find one, for best advice.
