Question for 'outdoor dog' owners. We are moving & there is a dog house already there. How can I help him ...?
How can I help him to adopt the dog house that is there? When we rescued him he was living (barely) at the county dumpsters & was emaciated, wormy, & maybe 20 lbs. Now, a year later he is taller on his hind legs than my 6ft husband. He is soo smart & obedient. I have had dogs all my life but this is the first time I have had one that lived inside. We are moving to a smaller house out in the country & it has a big dog house (more like a goat shed: its 5ftX8ft) so I know it will accommodate him. We rescued another dog who is 9 yrs old about four months ago she lived outside her entire life. (*Her life companion passed away from cancer & she gave up, stopped eating & wouldn't move. We took her in & kept her inside with Moe & now she acts like a puppy again.) They sleep together & flea each other. So he will not be alone.
I would really like some advice on how to make the 'new' dog house HIS area.
Wow there is really no avoiding people like you is there? HE IS NOT OUTSIDE ALONE.
He is outdoors & Indoors everyday here, my dogs have NEVER been chained up or fenced. We are moving further into the country. The female HAD always been strictly an outdoor dog until she moved in with us. You are asking questions that were answered in my original post & NOT answering the question I asked.
We live in south rural Georgia. There are no leash laws here & I will NOT pen up my dogs. They come the first time I call them, as well as follow commands.
Thank you Adder for suggesting putting some of their toys out in the new dog house.
Girl, you obviously do not know what a troll is. A troll asks outrageously offensive questions for the purpose of gaining lots of answers. Mine is a legitimate question. I really wish there was a way to zero point people for not answering.

Depending on when they are going to be in here, I'd suggest perhaps putting some of their toys and/or bedding in there.
One of my dogs moves his bedding around the house and, if we move it, he'll lie there. He'll also go where his toys are so maybe you could do that too.
Also, does he have any favourite biscuits or anything that you could put in there or maybe a bone?
Just try to make it as homely as possible for him with things that are familiar to him.

It shouldn't take much for the dogs to accept the doghouse as theirs, but you could put some of their toys in the doghouse to clue them in that it's their area.
I would keep the dog(s) indoor once they've been indoor dogs. Maybe put them out when you leave, but when you're home, let them be with you. I would never keep a single dog on an outdoor only basis.

getting a fenced dog run... is only one dog living outside now??? he will be sad, why are you switching from being indoor dog to outdoor only???
he will be confused because his people are not with him so really should have a fenced dog run around the shelter for a month at least..
